Wellborn Home Additions & ADU: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
If you’re planning a home addition or ADU with Wellborn cabinetry in San Diego, you’re looking at $53,100 to $153,400 for a full addition, and $106,200 to $259,600 for a detached ADU, depending on square footage, site conditions, and the cabinet line you choose. Most San Diego homeowners discover their Wellborn cabinet boxes, drawer glides, or door hinges are failing during a kitchen remodel inside the addition, or when the ADU’s kitchenette doors start sagging after a humid coastal season. We stock Wellborn-compatible hardware and cabinet components, and we can usually have replacement parts installed within a week of your first call.
We’re an independent San Diego remodeling company, not a Wellborn dealer. That means we tell you straight what’s worth replacing versus what’s worth repairing, and we give you a written price before any work starts.
Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

Wellborn builds cabinets across several lines: the entry-level Essentials, the mid-range Premier and Estate lines, and the custom Signature series. The hardware specs differ between them, which is the compatibility gotcha most San Diego homeowners run into. A hinge from an Essentials cabinet won’t take the same screw pattern as an Estate cabinet, even if both doors are 15 inches wide. If you flip a drawer box and look for the Wellborn stamp on the underside, you’ll see a date code and a series letter. That’s the information we need before we order anything.
For San Diego coastal homes specifically, we see more swelling in the drawer boxes and more hinge corrosion from salt air. Wellborn’s plywood box construction holds up better than MDF in that environment, but the standard steel hinges will still pit eventually. For replacement parts, Wellborn’s OEM hardware is solid, but we often recommend aftermarket soft-close glides from Blum or Salice because they carry a longer cycle rating than the originals and cost about the same. The exception is door fronts and drawer fronts: those need to be ordered through Wellborn or a Wellborn dealer to match the finish exactly.
How to identify your cabinet series: Look inside the sink base cabinet, on the left wall. There should be a white or silver label with the model number, series letter, and a five-digit date code. If the label is gone, measure the drawer glide extension: Essentials pulls 12 inches, Estate and Signature pull 16 or 21 inches depending on the cabinet depth.

Signs Your Wellborn Home Additions & ADU Is Failing
- Drawer glides bind or catch halfway. The glide rails have worn through the nylon bearings, usually after 8 to 12 years of daily use. You feel a gravelly resistance before the drawer jams.
- Hinges sag so the door scrapes the cabinet frame. The hinge plate screws have stripped out of the particleboard sides, or the hinge’s internal spring has lost tension. This is the most common failure we see in San Diego ADUs, especially in compact kitchens where the same two doors get opened fifty times a day.
- The door or drawer front pulls away from the box. This usually means the cam locks inside the drawer box have worked loose. It’s repairable, but if the box itself is swollen from moisture, the fix won’t hold long.
- Soft-close stops catching. The damper piston inside the hinge or glide has failed. You’ll hear the door slam instead of easing shut. One failed damper on a hinge is a $5 part; ignoring it means the door now slams every time and starts loosening the other hinge screws.
- Finish flaking on the inside edge of door frames. That’s moisture getting past the finish, common in San Diego homes within a mile of the coast. The finish can’t be spot-repaired to match; the door front needs replacement.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For the cabinet work inside a San Diego home addition or ADU, here’s what we typically see:
- Cabinet hardware replacement (hinges, glides, dampers): $150 to $600 installed, depending on how many cabinets are involved and whether the replacements are OEM or aftermarket soft-close.
- Drawer box replacement: $180 to $450 per drawer box, including new glides and a matched finish on the front panel.
- Cabinet installation inside a new addition or ADU: $4,720 to $15,340 depending on the cabinet count, finish level, and whether crown molding and light rail are involved.
- Full kitchen remodel within a home addition: $16,520 to $53,100, which includes the cabinet package, countertops, backsplash, and plumbing fixtures.
- Full home addition (foundation through cabinets): $53,100 to $153,400 for the structure, mechanicals, finishes, and cabinetry built to San Diego code.
- ADU construction, complete: $106,200 to $259,600 depending on size (a 400-square-foot studio costs far less than a two-bedroom unit), site access, utility runs, and the finish level you choose for the cabinetry, countertops, and fixtures.
The range on full additions and ADUs in San Diego comes down to soil conditions (sloped lots in Mission Hills and Point Loma need more foundation work), the permit path (some neighborhoods trigger additional review), and how far your existing electrical panel has to stretch. For cabinet-only work, the range is driven mostly by the cabinet line you’re matching and whether we’re repairing existing boxes or installing new ones.
Every quote includes parts and labor in one written number. If we say $685 to replace four hinges and two glide sets, that’s the invoice total, not the starting point. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if a hinge we installed fails in the first year, we come back and fix it at no charge. You’ll get that in writing before we touch a single cabinet.

Replacing a single hinge or glide is a reasonable afternoon job if you have the right screwdriver, a drill with a #2 bit, and the patience to keep screw depth even. The risk isn’t safety here, it’s fit: hinge screws driven too deep will strip the wood, and now you need a larger screw and a longer fix. What’s worth checking yourself: tighten all hinge screws and glide mounting screws. If the problem is a stripped screw hole, a toothpick and wood glue will hold for a while. But if the hinge internal spring is shot or the drawer box is swollen, you’re buying parts anyway, and getting the wrong series means returning them and starting over. At that point, call us at (619) 604-9624 and we’ll match the part and install it. The call is free, and we answer it with a person, not a voicemail tree.
If the work is bigger, a full home addition or ADU in San Diego, this is not a DIY conversation. Foundation, framing, electrical, plumbing, and cabinetry all need to be permitted and inspected. Trevor Nash will walk you through what’s behind each wall before a single permit gets pulled. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.
FAQs

Wellborn’s plywood cabinet boxes typically last 20 to 30 years in San Diego’s climate, but the hinges and glides wear out every 8 to 12 years. Homes within a mile of the coast will see hinge corrosion and finish wear faster than inland homes in Rancho Bernardo or Scripps Ranch. The box is rarely the problem; the hardware is. Call (619) 604-9624 for an honest assessment of what’s worth replacing.
Sometimes. A stripped screw hole can be re-packed with a larger screw or a hardwood plug, and a misaligned hinge can be re-set. But if the hinge’s internal spring or the glide’s ball bearing cage has failed, the part is done and needs to be swapped. Repairs that get you another six months are worth doing; repairs that fail again in six weeks aren’t. We’ll tell you which one you have before we start.
Most hinge and glide replacement jobs take 2 to 4 hours for a standard 10-cabinet kitchen, assuming the parts are in hand. If we need to order Wellborn-specific door fronts or drawer fronts, expect 4 to 6 weeks for the manufacturer to ship. We quote the timeline with the price, and we don’t call it done until every door closes the way it should.
We stock the most common replacement hardware: soft-close hinges, glide sets, cam locks, and damper clips for Wellborn’s Essentials, Premier, and Estate lines. For Signature series or rare finish-matched parts, we order directly and you’ll have the cost and lead time before we place the order. We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone products when the job goes beyond cabinetry.
