Wellborn Bathroom Remodeling: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
If you have a Wellborn bathroom vanity, cabinet, or linen tower that’s failed, and you’re weighing replacement parts against a larger bathroom remodel, here’s the straight answer: we install Wellborn-compatible bathroom cabinetry and full bathroom remodels across San Diego, with complete jobs typically landing between $10,620 and $33,040 depending on scope, cabinet line, and what’s behind the existing tile. We match, source, and install Wellborn product every week, and we’ll give you a written price before any work starts. Most San Diego homeowners discover the problem the same way: a drawer face delaminates from shower humidity, a hinge pulls loose from a swollen cabinet box, or the finish on a vanity starts clouding where water pooled near the sink apron.
We are an independent San Diego remodeling contractor, not a Wellborn factory outlet or corporate affiliate. What that means for you: we can spec a Wellborn replacement cabinet or a complete bathroom project without any brand-loyalty pressure, and we’ll tell you honestly when a part-level fix makes more sense than a full gut.
Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

Wellborn builds bathroom cabinetry across several lines, and the hardware and box specifications shift between them. The ones we see most in San Diego homes are the Estate, Premier, and Select series, along with a fair number of cabinet shop specials that were built to Wellborn’s spec slate but sold through local kitchen and bath dealers in the 1990s and early 2000s.
The compatibility gotcha that catches people: Wellborn has changed hinge plate spacing and drawer box construction at least twice in the last twenty years. A 2004 Estate vanity drawer front will not hang correctly on a 2018 Premier drawer box, even if both are labeled 18-inch vanities. Before you order any replacement part, open the drawer and look for the printed label on the inside of the side panel. It carries the series code, the finish code, and the manufactured date, usually as a three-letter prefix. If the label is gone, measure the overlay, not the drawer face. San Diego coastal humidity swells the face slightly, so a face measured at 18 and 3/8 inches may actually be an 18-inch overlay. Take the measurement from the back edge of the drawer box, not the front lip.
For OEM versus aftermarket: Wellborn door and drawer faces are still available directly through the company, but lead times run four to six weeks and the finish will not be an exact match to a cabinet that has sat in a San Diego bathroom for ten years. We tell every homeowner this up front, because light exposure and moisture change finish tone. A quality aftermarket face, finished to match by a local San Diego finisher, often matches better in real life than a factory-new OEM face. For hardware, Blum and Salice hinges are functionally equivalent to the Wellborn-approved originals, and we stock both on the truck along with the more common Wellborn door bumpers and adjustable shelf pins.

Signs Your Wellborn Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Finish clouding or lifting near the sink and faucet deck. This is moisture wicking under the catalyzed finish. Once the edge banding lifts, water gets into the particleboard core and the panel swells permanently. Replacing the face alone won’t fix it; the swollen box has to go too.
- Drawer fronts pulling loose or splintering at the screw holes. The screws Wellborn used on older lines were shorter than ideal for daily bathroom use. Over time, the constant open-close cycle strips the thread, and the face starts sagging. We can rebuild the screw boss with a threaded insert, but if the particleboard behind the boss has turned to dust, it’s a new drawer box.
- Hinges that won’t stay adjusted. Soft-close hinges lose their damping force as the internal fluid degrades, usually around the eight to ten year mark in a humid bathroom. If you’ve adjusted the same hinge twice and it still slams, the hinge is done, not the cabinet box.
- Swelling at the toe kick or along the bottom rail. This is the classic San Diego bathroom problem: water from the shower splash zone or the sink overflow wicks up through the bottom of the cabinet. The box core absorbs it like a sponge. By the time you can see the swelling, the bottom rail has lost most of its structural integrity.
- Mold or mildew inside the cabinet that keeps coming back. That smell isn’t just a cleaning problem, it means the cabinet back panel is holding moisture. In San Diego’s marine layer, a cabinet sitting against an exterior bathroom wall rarely dries out once saturated. The fix is a new back panel at minimum, usually a full cabinet replacement.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Diego, a single Wellborn-compatible vanity replacement, including new cabinet, top, and hardware install, typically runs $945 to $3,540 depending on the vanity size, top material, and whether we’re reusing existing plumbing locations. A more complete bathroom remodel that includes new Wellborn cabinetry, a shower or tub replacement, tile, and fixtures lands between $10,620 and $33,040. The spread comes down to three things: whether you’re reconfiguring the plumbing (moving a drain line in a San Diego slab foundation is very different from a crawlspace home in Clairemont), the Wellborn cabinet line you choose, and what’s behind the existing tile once we open the wall.
Every quote from us is a written number before we start, not a range to be narrowed down later. It includes the parts, the labor, the haul-away, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If something fails inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing, on every job, no exceptions. We also leave the job site cleaner than we found it, which matters a lot when you’re living in the house during a bathroom remodel in San Diego.
DIY or Call Us?
Some of this work is genuinely safe to do yourself. Replacing a soft-close hinge, swapping a drawer pull, or adjusting drawer slides are fifteen minute jobs, and you won’t hurt anything doing them. When you get into vanity replacement or any work that moves supply lines and drain traps, you now have a plumbing job attached to a cabinet job, and that’s where San Diego homeowners get burned. A small leak at a badly sealed drain connection will destroy a new vanity inside a year, and the water damage underneath won’t be visible until the cabinet starts to fail.
We’re not saying you can’t replace a vanity yourself. We’re saying the risk is higher than it looks, and the guarantee is on you if the next cabinet swells. If you’d rather have a written number and a written guarantee, tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there. Call (619) 604-9624.
FAQs

A well-installed Wellborn vanity in a properly ventilated San Diego bathroom should last 15 to 25 years, but the finish and lower rails typically show moisture damage earlier than that in homes near the coast. We regularly see 12-year-old vanities with soft bottoms where shower steam and sink splash wicked up through the toe kick. The cabinet box usually fails before the doors or drawer fronts do.
If the damage is limited to a door face or a drawer front, yes, replacing those parts is straightforward and cost-effective. But if the bottom rail, toe kick, or back panel is swollen, the particleboard core is compromised and no repair will hold long-term. We’ll tell you which situation you have before you spend a dollar. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll walk through what you’re seeing.
A single vanity replacement with existing plumbing locations stays put usually takes one full day, including removing the old cabinet, setting the new one, and reconnecting everything. A complete Wellborn bathroom remodel in San Diego typically runs two to four weeks depending on the shower work, tile, and whether any framing changes are involved.
We stock common soft-close hinges, drawer slides, shelf pins, door bumpers, and a selection of matching knobs and pulls for Wellborn and KraftMaid cabinetry on the truck, along with Cambria and Silestone top samples for same-day color matching. Full door and drawer fronts are ordered per finish code, and we’ll give you an honest lead time before you commit. Call (619) 604-9624 for an exact quote, estimates are free.
