Toto Driveway & Pavers: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
We install and replace Toto-compatible paver driveways across San Diego, with most projects landing between $8,260 and $21,240 depending on square footage, paver grade, and what’s underneath the failed surface. Most homeowners discover a problem the same way: a paver sinks after a winter rain, a border row shifts out of line, or water pools in a new spot that used to drain fine. The good news is that a failed paver driveway rarely needs a full tear-out. We match the Toto product line’s dimensions and finish profile so the repair blends with what you already have, and we carry common replacement pavers on our trucks.
Which Toto Models This Applies To

Toto’s paver lines run in standardized thicknesses, and that’s where compatibility gets tricky if you’re buying parts yourself. The Toto driveway paver series is manufactured in 60mm and 80mm depths for vehicular traffic, while their walkway and patio lines use a thinner 40mm profile that won’t survive a car rolling over it. If you’re matching an existing driveway, flip over a loose paver and look for the stamped series code on the bottom face. The code tells us the mold, color lot, and production run – three things that matter if you want the repair to disappear rather than announce itself. One San Diego-specific gotcha: Toto’s lighter colorways, especially the sandstone and ivory finishes, fade at different rates under our UV exposure. A paver pulled from a pallet stored in shade for two years will not match one that’s been baking on your driveway for five. We factor that in and order from current production lots when we can.
When OEM Toto pavers are discontinued or backordered, we offer quality aftermarket equivalents from Belgard and Unilock that match the dimensional grid. Penhallow Remodeling San Diego is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Toto, but we stock and install their product lines because we’ve found them consistent and well-supported for warranty claims.

Signs Your Toto Driveway & Pavers Are Failing
- Settling or dipping in traffic areas. This almost always points to a failing base layer, not the paver itself. San Diego’s clay-heavy soils expand and contract with moisture, and a base that was poured too thin or never compacted properly will let pavers sink in a matter of seasons. We’ve seen dips of two inches in Rancho Bernardo driveways that were installed less than five years ago.
- Sand washing out between joints. If you’re sweeping sand back into the seams after every rain, the edge restraints are failing or the joint sand was never stabilized. Once water gets under the pavers, the freeze-thaw cycle isn’t the enemy here in San Diego – it’s erosion from repeated saturation and drying.
- Cracked or chipped pavers along the border rows. Border pavers take the most lateral force from turning tires. When the edge restraint is plastic instead of concrete, the outside row flexes and the pavers crack at the corners.
- Standing water that lingers for hours. A properly sloped paver driveway should shed water within minutes. Puddles that stay all afternoon mean the slope has flattened or the base has shifted – both are repair signals, not a reason to live with it.
- Weeds pushing through seams repeatedly. One or two weeds is normal wear. A full breakout every spring means the joint sand has failed and soil is working its way up. That soil is also working its way under the pavers, which accelerates the settling problem.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Paver driveway installation in San Diego typically runs $8,260 to $21,240 installed. The spread comes down to three things: total square footage, whether we’re reusing the existing base or excavating and rebuilding it, and which paver line you choose. A partial repair – say, resetting a sunken section of 200 square feet with new base and joint sand – lands between $1,500 and $4,000. Full replacement with a new concrete edge restraint and stabilized joint sand goes higher, but you get a driveway that holds its line for 20-plus years.
Every quote includes the paver material, base prep, delivery, install, and haul-away of the old surface. We hand you a written price before any work starts, and that number is the number on the invoice. No change orders unless you ask for something different mid-project. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something fails within the first year, we come back and fix it at no charge. The Toto pavers themselves carry their own manufacturer warranty, which we’ll help you register.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself. Pull up a loose paver and look at the base material underneath. If it’s just sand or dirt, that’s your problem – a vehicular driveway needs a compacted aggregate base of at least four inches. You can also check whether your edge restraints are concrete or plastic by probing along the border with a screwdriver. But resetting pavers properly means compacting in lifts, re-grading for drainage, and re-stabilizing joint sand – and if you skip any step, you’ll be looking at the same dip again in eighteen months. Concrete base work and compaction equipment are not a weekend rental project for most people.
Trevor Nash, our owner, started running remodeling and hardscape crews in San Diego nearly twenty years ago, and he’ll tell you the same thing he tells every homeowner at the first walkthrough: “Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.” Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll walk the driveway with you, identify what failed, and give you a written number for the fix.
FAQs

A properly installed Toto paver driveway lasts 20 to 30 years in San Diego’s climate. The pavers themselves rarely fail – what fails is the base underneath them or the edge restraints around them. Fix those early and the surface itself will outlast most of your neighbors’ concrete.

Yes, and that’s what we recommend for most failures. If the issue is localized settling, cracked border pavers, or failed joint sand, we can repair the affected section without tearing out the whole driveway. The only time full replacement makes sense is when the base layer has failed across a large area or the original install used the wrong materials entirely.
Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll tell you which one you’re looking at.
Most San Diego paver driveway repairs take one to two days on site. A partial reset of a sunken section is usually a single day. A full replacement with base excavation runs three to five days depending on square footage and access. We’ll give you a written arrival window before the work starts, and the crew shows up when we said they would.

We carry the most common Toto driveway paver profiles and colors on our trucks for small repairs. For larger repairs or full replacements, we order from current production lots to ensure a clean color match. Either way, we’ll tell you the timeline before anything goes on the calendar. We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone product lines for other parts of the home, but for driveway work it’s Toto, Belgard, and Unilock.
