Sterling Kitchen Remodeling: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
Sterling kitchen remodeling in San Diego typically runs $16,520 to $53,100, depending on layout, cabinet line, and countertop material. We work with homeowners across San Diego who have Sterling fixtures, sinks, or plumbing components that are failing, outdated, or simply no longer holding up, and we build the surrounding kitchen to match. Most people reach out after a Sterling sink shows cracks around the basin, a faucet mount corrodes, or the cabinet boxes around a Sterling fixture have swollen from years of slow leaks they never noticed.
We’re an independent remodeling contractor, not affiliated with Sterling. We’re familiar with their sink and fixture lines, how they integrate with standard cabinet and countertop dimensions, and what fails first in San Diego’s hard-water and coastal-air conditions. If your Sterling product is still solid and the problem is the kitchen around it, this page will walk you through exactly what to expect.
Which Sterling Models This Applies To

Sterling, a Kohler company, builds kitchen sinks, faucets, and some bath-to-kitchen adjacent fixtures. The sink lines we see most in San Diego homes are the Sterling KSD series and the older SBX drop-in models. The compatibility question that trips up most homeowners is this: a Sterling sink’s bowl depth and drain offset are not universal. A 9-inch-deep Sterling dual-basin sink needs a specific cabinet width, usually 33 to 36 inches, while a single-basin model will drop into a 30-inch cabinet. If you’re replacing the cabinet, countertop, or sink together, we measure the existing cutout before ordering anything, because the moment someone swaps a 7-inch-depth bowl for a 10-inch-depth bowl without checking the plumbing clearance, the P-trap no longer lines up and the job turns into re-plumbing.
On the replacement decision: Sterling OEM parts are worth it when the sink itself is still in good shape and you only need a strainer assembly or a mounting clip kit. But for a full kitchen remodel, we generally recommend moving to a current production sink from Kohler or Moen rather than hunting down a discontinued Sterling part that may not seat cleanly against a new quartz or Cambria countertop. The warranty math matters too. Sterling covers their sinks against manufacturing defects, but the countertop you set it into carries its own warranty, and a mismatched cutout voids nothing but creates a caulk line that fails early. We install Cambria and Silestone quartz countertops alongside cabinet lines from KraftMaid and Wellborn, and we can spec the sink cutout for whatever you’re replacing, Sterling or otherwise.

Signs Your Sterling Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- The sink basin has hairline cracks radiating from the drain opening. This is the classic failure on older Sterling drop-in models. The metal drain flange expands and contracts with hot and cold water, and over time the porcelain or composite around it fatigues. Once a crack reaches the underside, you get a slow drip that rots the cabinet floor before you ever see water on top.
- The faucet base is corroded or the finish is peeling. San Diego’s water is moderately hard, and coastal humidity accelerates finish breakdown on faucet bodies. If your Sterling faucet shows green crust around the base or the chrome is lifting, the internal cartridge is usually next, and the repair cost starts approaching replacement territory.
- Cabinet sides or the toe-kick are swollen or darkened below the sink. That’s a sign a Sterling sink flange or supply line has been weeping slowly for months. By the time you see it, the cabinet box is likely compromised. We open up one side panel during the estimate to check whether the structure can be saved or if the whole base cabinet goes on the replacement list.
- The countertop seam running behind the sink is separating or stained. This happens when the substrate underneath was cut too wide for the sink rim, or when years of water exposure have swollen the particleboard. In San Diego homes built in the 1980s through early 2000s, we routinely find original laminate counters with no waterproof edge treatment at the Sterling sink cutout.
- The sink no longer holds water or drains slowly regardless of cleaning. That points to a warped basin or a failed seal at the basket strainer. If the sink rim has pulled away from the counter, the fix usually means pulling the sink, replacing the rim seal, and in many cases replacing the countertop edge that’s too far gone to reseal cleanly.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A Sterling-specific kitchen remodel in San Diego runs $16,520 to $53,100 when we’re replacing the sink, surrounding cabinetry, countertop, and any affected plumbing. Here’s how that range breaks down:
- Small kitchen remodel: $10,620 to $23,600. Compact galley or condo kitchens, stock cabinet line, laminate or entry quartz countertop, single-basin sink replacement.
- Cabinet installation: $4,720 to $15,340. KraftMaid or Wellborn lines, custom fit around the existing or new Sterling sink footprint.
- Countertop installation: $2,360 to $7,670. Includes template, fabrication, and sink cutout. Cambria and Silestone quartz both carry manufacturer warranties alongside our written workmanship guarantee.
- Backsplash installation: $945 to $2,950. Tile work around the sink wall, including cement board substrate if the drywall behind the existing tile is compromised.
- Kitchen island installation: $3,540 to $11,800. When the island carries the sink and needs plumbing relocation, this moves toward the upper end.
What drives the price up or down: whether the plumbing needs to be moved to a new sink location, whether the existing cabinet boxes can be reused, how much tile or countertop demolition is involved, and what grade of countertop material you pick. Every estimate we write in San Diego includes a fixed line-item price before any work starts. The number on the estimate is the number on the final invoice. If a change is needed mid-job, we put the change price in writing and you approve it before we touch it. Every project also comes with our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we come back and make it right at no charge, in writing.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things before calling: look under the sink with a flashlight for water stains, run a paper towel along the supply line connections to feel for moisture, and snap a picture of the model label on the underside of your Sterling sink. That label tells us the series and cutout dimensions, which speeds up the quote. Things you should not attempt yourself: removing a sink that’s sealed to a quartz or granite countertop (the risk of chipping the stone edge is high), cutting cabinet boxes out from under a countertop that you’re keeping, or trying to reseal a cracked basin with epoxy and silicone. A patch job on a cracked Sterling sink holds for a few weeks at best, and the failure usually happens while you’re away, which is how a small drip becomes a rotted cabinet floor.

FAQs

Most Sterling sinks last 15 to 25 years in a San Diego kitchen, though the hard-water scaling and coastal humidity here shorten that on faucet finishes and drain hardware. The sink basin itself usually outlasts the countertop it’s set into.
We don’t repair cracked sink basins. A crack at the drain opening or a split in the bowl wall is a structural failure, and no epoxy we’ve ever tested holds for more than a few weeks under daily hot and cold cycling. Replacement is the honest fix, and it’s usually less expensive than repairing the water damage if you wait. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll price the replacement sink plus whatever surrounding cabinet or countertop work is needed.
A straight sink swap with no countertop or cabinet work takes one day on site. A full kitchen remodel around a Sterling sink takes three to six weeks, depending on countertop fabrication time and cabinet delivery. We give you a written timeline with the written price, and we show up in the window we gave.
Our crews carry common Sterling strainer assemblies, mounting clips, and supply fittings on every San Diego job so a small parts issue doesn’t stall the work. If your existing sink is discontinued and the part isn’t readily available, we’ll present the replacement options at the estimate, not after the countertop is off. Call (619) 604-9624 for a free in-home estimate and we’ll tell you exactly what’s in stock and what has to be ordered.
