Sterling Bathroom Remodeling: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
Sterling bathroom remodeling in San Diego typically costs $10,620 – $33,040 for a full renovation, with smaller projects like a tub-to-shower conversion running $4,130 – $11,800. We stock and install Sterling-compatible surrounds, shower bases, and trim kits, and we can usually match your existing model the same week you call. Most San Diego homeowners discover a problem the hard way: a crack in the shower base, a surround panel that’s pulling away from the wall, or a drain that’s started leaking through the ceiling below.
Sterling, part of the Kohler family, is known for its Vikrell composite shower surrounds and bases. When these parts fail, the fix isn’t always obvious. Sometimes the part itself is shot. Sometimes the real issue is what’s behind it. We’ll walk through both.
Which Sterling Models This Applies To

Sterling’s bathroom lineup breaks into a few main families. The Ensemble series is the most common in San Diego homes built in the 1990s and 2000s. The Accord and Performa lines show up often in newer builds and remodels. Each series has its own drain location, base dimensions, and wall-surround configuration, and they do not interchange. An Ensemble base won’t line up with an Accord surround, and the drain rough-in can be off by two inches or more.
The quickest way to identify your model is the label molded into the underside of the shower base or the back of the surround panel. It’ll list the series name and a four- to six-digit model number. If you can’t get to the label, measure the base’s width and depth at the drain line. Sterling bases run 30″, 32″, 34″, 36″, 48″, and 60″ wide. The 32″ x 60″ size is the one we replace most often in San Diego condo complexes and older single-family homes in Clairemont and Pacific Beach.
On the OEM-vs-aftermarket question: for Sterling specifically, we use OEM parts. Vikrell is a compression-molded composite that’s engineered to match specific drain assemblies and trim kits. An aftermarket base that’s “the same size” often isn’t quite, and the last thing you want is a 1/8″ gap at the flange that leaks into your subfloor. We’d rather order the right part and wait three days than install something close and come back in a year.

Signs Your Sterling Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Hairline cracks in the shower base. Vikrell is tough, but it flexes. If the base wasn’t set in a proper mortar bed, repeated flexing eventually creates stress cracks at the drain or along the floor’s low points. Water then seeps through to the subfloor below.
- A surround panel pulling away from the wall. This usually means the adhesive behind the panel has failed, or the wall itself has shifted. Left alone, the gap widens and water runs behind the panel, into the stud cavity.
- Persistent musty smell you can’t source. That odor is almost always trapped moisture. In San Diego’s coastal zones, where humidity runs high from May through October, a small leak behind a Sterling surround can go undetected for months.
- Soft spots in the floor outside the shower. When a drain gasket or base seal fails, water travels. The vinyl or tile just outside the shower starts to compress. By the time you feel it, the subfloor has already absorbed a season’s worth of water.
- The drain gasket drips even when the shower isn’t in use. That’s a worn or compressed rubber gasket at the drain body. It’s a five-dollar part that can cause five-thousand dollars in ceiling damage below if ignored.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we tell homeowners in San Diego about Sterling bathroom work before anyone touches a tool:
- Shower base replacement: $3,540 – $10,030 installed, depending on the base size and whether the drain assembly needs to be moved.
- Surround panel replacement (partial): $2,360 – $7,670. If the remaining panels are still solid, we can sometimes replace just the failed section.
- Tub-to-shower conversion with Sterling pan and surround: $4,130 – $11,800. This is the single most common bathroom project we do in San Diego, and it’s where the Sterling system really shines.
- Full bathroom remodel with Sterling fixtures: $10,620 – $33,040, depending on whether we’re also moving plumbing, replacing the vanity, re-tiling, or adding a curbless entry.
The range comes down to three things: demolition scope, whether the subfloor or framing needs repair once we open things up, and what finishes you’re adding beyond the Sterling pieces. We give you a written price before any work starts. Not a range, not a ballpark. A number you can hold us to.
Every Sterling bathroom project includes our written 365-Day Done Right Promise. If something fails within a year, we come back and fix it. No service call fee, no re-inspection fee, no negotiation. It’s the same Kingswell standard we’ve worked to since 2004: say the price before the work. Show up in the window we gave. Leave the place cleaner than we found it.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can check the label on your Sterling base or panel yourself. You can tighten a loose drain cover. You can run a bead of silicone along a caulk line that’s shrinking. Those are all fair game.
What we’d tell you not to do is pull a Sterling shower base yourself. The base sits on a mortar bed, and getting it out without damaging the drain assembly, the wall flange, or the surrounding tile is genuinely difficult. And once the base is out, you’re looking at whatever’s underneath: in San Diego homes from the 1970s and 80s, that’s often dry rot from decades of slow leaks, and that’s a framing and waterproofing job, not a weekend fix.
If your Sterling part has failed, call (619) 604-9624. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there. That’s how Trevor Nash runs every estimate, and it’s how every Penhallow Remodeling San Diego job starts.
FAQs

A properly installed Sterling Vikrell base typically lasts 20 to 30 years in San Diego’s climate. The failures we see are rarely the material itself giving out; they’re installation-related, usually a base set without a proper mortar bed or a drain gasket that was over-tightened. If your base cracked at year eight, the base wasn’t the problem.
A surface crack can sometimes be patched with a Vikrell repair kit, but we’re honest about the odds: a patch on a stress crack is a temporary answer. The crack formed because something underneath is flexing, and the patch will fail the same way. If you want a repair that still looks good in three years, replacement is the real fix. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll tell you which path makes sense after seeing it.
Most San Diego tub-to-shower conversions using Sterling parts take two to three working days: one day for demo and plumbing, one day for base and surround install, and a partial day for trim, caulk, and cleanup. We’ll give you the arrival window in writing before the job starts.
We keep the most common Sterling bases and trim kits on the truck for San Diego service calls, including the 32×60 Ensemble base and standard drain assemblies. Less common sizes and colors go on order, typically three to five business days. We also work with Kohler, KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for the finishes around your Sterling shower, so your vanity top and cabinetry are handled in the same project.
