Silestone Home Additions & ADU: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

If you’re planning a home addition or ADU in San Diego and want Silestone quartz on the counters, the installed cost typically lands between $53,100 and $153,400 depending on square footage, layout complexity, and how much Silestone surface you’re covering. We stock and install Silestone for kitchen counters, bathroom vanities, laundry rooms, and outdoor kitchen surfaces in new additions and detached ADUs across San Diego County. Most owners figure out this isn’t a simple counter swap when they realize the existing slab won’t physically fit the new footprint, or the Silestone color they picked five years ago has been discontinued and they need a full perimeter match.

Which Silestone Models This Applies To

Silestone runs dozens of series, and that matters more than you’d think when your addition or ADU needs countertop surfaces that match an existing home. The Ethereal series (think Et Marquina, Et Bella) has veining that doesn’t always match slab to slab, so if you’re extending a kitchen island, you’ll want to confirm the lot code with your fabricator before anyone cuts. The Loft series and Sunlit Days line are more consistent for large projects because the pattern repeats more predictably. If your original Silestone is older than eight or nine years, there’s a real chance the color has been retired, which means you’ll either need a complementary rather than identical match, or you redo the whole surface run. The label under the slab (usually on the underside near a corner) gives the color name and production date, and a good installer will photograph it before quoting.

One thing to know in San Diego: Silestone is a quartz product, not natural stone, so it doesn’t need sealing. That’s a genuine advantage in a coastal climate where humidity and hard water can etch natural stone over time. But it also means repair is not really a thing. You don’t refinish Silestone. If a slab cracks or chips badly, you replace the section. That reality shapes how we quote ADU and addition work: the right number is the one that includes a full template, fabrication, and install, not a patch job that opens up six months later.

Signs Your Silestone Home Additions & ADU Is Failing

  • Hairline cracks radiating from a sink cutout or cooktop opening. In San Diego’s dry inland zones like El Cajon or Santee, the temperature swing between a cold winter night and a hot afternoon causes quartz slabs to expand and contract. If the original install didn’t leave the right gap at the walls, the slab binds and cracks at its weakest point. That’s almost always the narrow front rail of the sink cutout.
  • A seam that’s no longer flush. Quartz is heavy, roughly 20 pounds per square foot. If the cabinet bases under an island seam settle even an eighth of an inch, the seam opens up or the two slabs ride at different heights. You’ll feel it when you drag a pot across the counter. The cause is usually a cabinet install that didn’t account for the point load, not the quartz itself.
  • Chalky white spots that won’t wipe off. That’s not the quartz failing. It’s hard-water mineral buildup or, in a few cases, the wrong cleaner eating the resin binder. San Diego’s water is notoriously mineral-heavy, especially in newer communities served by harder groundwater blends. The fix is a proper pH-neutral quartz cleaner and, in bad cases, a professional polish.
  • A visible gap between the backsplash and the counter that grows. This shows up in ADUs built on pier foundations or anything over expansive soil. The structure moves slightly, the cabinets stay put, but the backsplash was siliconed to a moving wall. The gap widens, water gets in, and the caulk fails. It’s a flashing and seam problem, not a Silestone problem, but it’s the thing that most often prompts a service call.
  • Edge chips on overhangs. Silestone edges are tough but not bulletproof. A heavy pot swung too far, a chair backed into a knee wall cap, a drawer yanked out of a bathroom vanity in a tight ADU hall. Small chips happen, and while a good fabricator can color-fill a minor chip with a quartz repair kit, a deep chunk out of an eased edge usually means replacing that section.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a home addition or ADU countertop scope specifically, San Diego pricing runs with the broader addition budget, but the Silestone portion typically represents $2,360 to $7,670 per surface run depending on the color tier, edge profile, and slab waste factor. A basic 30-square-foot ADU kitchen with a straight run and a single sink cutout will sit at the lower end. A full kitchen island with a mitered waterfall edge, a bathroom double vanity, and a laundry fold-down counter sits closer to the top. What drives the number: square footage, edge detail (eased is standard, mitered or chiseled costs more), whether the slab is a stocked color or special order, and how tight the access is at the job site. Every number we quote in San Diego is written, line-itemed, and includes template, fabrication, install, and haul-away of the old surface. You get the price before we cut anything, and the number doesn’t move unless the scope does.

DIY or Call Us?

A full Silestone countertop replacement is not a DIY job. These slabs weigh hundreds of pounds, and a broken slab doesn’t just wreck the counter, it takes out cabinets, flooring, and sometimes the person standing in the wrong spot. What you can do yourself: confirm the color name and lot code from the underside label so you’re ready for a quote. Check whether the crack is in the slab or just in the caulk joint at the wall, which is free to diagnose and tells us whether we’re quoting a re-caulk or a re-fabrication. And stay away from online videos suggesting epoxy fills or clip-and-brace repairs on a cracked quartz countertop. Quartz resin can’t be successfully re-bonded under tension, and what looks like a $30 fix turns into a full replacement a year later, after water has gotten under the slab and ruined the cabinet boxes. If the slab is cracked, chipped, or mismatched in a new addition, call us at (619) 604-9624 and we’ll send someone to template and quote it properly.
