Oldcastle Fence Installation: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

Oldcastle fence installation in San Diego typically runs $4,130 to $10,620 for a complete professionally-installed fence, depending on linear footage, terrain, and whether we’re setting posts in concrete or replacing existing rails and pickets. Most San Diego homeowners call us after a specific failure: a wind-damaged section along a canyon rim, a gate post that’s leaning after winter rains, or rails that have warped in the coastal salt air. We stock the common Oldcastle-compatible hardware and can usually match your existing fence line without a full teardown.

Here’s the thing about Oldcastle fencing: it’s built to a national spec, but San Diego’s site conditions are anything but national. Our decomposed granite soils, canyon wind corridors, and marine layer moisture mean the same panel that holds up fine in Phoenix needs a different post depth and anchoring method here in Clairemont or Rancho Bernardo. We plan for that from the first measurement.

Key Takeaways:

  • Installed Oldcastle fence work in San Diego: $4,130 – $10,620, with most full-yard replacements landing between $5,500 and $8,500.
  • We’re an independent installer, not affiliated with Oldcastle, but we work with their fence systems and compatible hardware daily.
  • Every quote is written before work starts, and every install carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing.
  • Call (619) 604-9624 and you’ll reach a live person who can walk through what you’re seeing.

Which Oldcastle Models This Applies To

Oldcastle doesn’t sell a single “fence line” the way some manufacturers do. What homeowners usually mean when they say “Oldcastle fence” is one of three things: Oldcastle Infrastructure precast concrete fence panels, Oldcastle APG vinyl and ornamental fence systems sold through landscape supply yards, or Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope architectural fence and rail products on multi-family and commercial properties. Each one has different post spacing, rail profiles, and fastening requirements, so the first thing we do is identify what you actually have.

The easiest way: look at the post caps, the rail profile, and any stamped markings on the panel edge or post base. Vinyl systems from Oldcastle APG use a routed rail pocket, so rails slide into posts rather than butt against them. The precast concrete panels have a distinct aggregate finish and are usually 6 to 8 feet wide. If you’re missing paperwork, send us a photo. We can usually identify the system and whether we have matching parts on the truck before our first visit.

One compatibility gotcha San Diego owners hit all the time: older Oldcastle vinyl fences installed before roughly 2012 used a different rail-to-post pocket depth than current production. That means a replacement top rail from today’s inventory may sit loose in an older post. We’ve learned to measure the pocket before ordering, not after. It’s a small step that saves a return trip.

Signs Your Oldcastle Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Leaning post with no visible crack at ground level. In San Diego’s granite-heavy soil, the concrete footing often erodes around the post base or was poured too shallow originally. The post is still intact; the footing is the failure. We see this most after a wet winter in Mission Valley and Tierrasanta.
  • Gate sagging, dragging on the latch side, or not latching at all. The hinge post has loosened or the gate frame has twisted. Oldcastle gates are heavy; they put real torque on the post every time they swing. A sagging gate is rarely just a hinge adjustment.
  • Warped or bowed vinyl rails along the top or middle run. San Diego’s sun loads, especially on west-facing runs in Scripps Ranch and Carmel Valley, can soften vinyl rails over time. Once a rail bows, it starts pulling the pickets out of alignment too.
  • Concrete panel with hairline cracks near the bottom third. This usually means the panel settled unevenly or the base wasn’t leveled properly. Hairlines in precast Oldcastle panels can grow quickly once water gets in and the rebar inside starts oxidizing.
  • Pickets popping out of the bottom rail after wind events. The rail channel has widened from UV exposure, or the picket tabs have snapped. Santa Ana wind gusts in the fall tend to expose this failure all at once, usually across a whole section rather than one or two pickets.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled staircase with wood treads and a slim metal railing

In San Diego, you’re looking at $4,130 to $10,620 for a complete Oldcastle-compatible fence installation, and the range mostly comes down to three things: linear footage, access and grade, and whether we’re pulling old concrete footings or starting fresh. A typical 60 to 80-foot backyard fence replacement lands in the $5,500 to $8,500 range. Partial repairs, like re-setting one gate post or replacing a single wind-damaged section, run lower and are priced by the line item.

What’s included: removal and haul-away of the failed section, new post footings sized for San Diego’s soil conditions (we go deeper than the national minimum because our decomposed granite shifts), all rails, pickets, post caps, and hardware, and a clean job site when we leave. Every quote is written, not verbal. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. And the whole install carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the fence fails inside a year because of our workmanship, we come back and fix it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

Fence work isn’t high-tension like a garage spring, and it won’t shock you like a panel, but that doesn’t mean it’s a weekend project for everyone. What you can safely do: document the damage with photos, check whether a gate hinge just needs tightening, and pull back loose soil at the base of a leaning post to see if the footing concrete is intact. What goes wrong in DIY: setting a fence post in San Diego’s hard-packed granite without the right auger is a full-day fight, and getting the post plumb and level on a slope takes a level of patience most people don’t budget for. Then there’s the drainage question. A post set without gravel at the base traps water against the concrete and fails early.

Trevor Nash and our crew have been setting fence lines across San Diego County for the better part of two decades. We’ve pulled posts in University City that were set in less than 18 inches of concrete and wondered how they stood as long as they did. If you want to check a few things yourself first, do it. If you’d rather hand it off: (619) 604-9624. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.
