Oldcastle Driveway & Pavers: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
If you have an Oldcastle paver driveway or patio in San Diego and a section is sinking, cracked, or pulling away at the edges, we can match the existing pavers and reinstall the failed section. A typical repair runs $825 – $3,500 depending on how many square feet need to be pulled, re-graded, and re-laid. The most common call we get goes something like this: a homeowner notices a low spot where water pools after rain, then a paver starts rocking underfoot, and within a few months the whole edge row has shifted out of line. By the time you see the rocking paver, the base under it has already washed out or compacted unevenly.
We’re an independent general contractor serving San Diego, and we’re not affiliated with Oldcastle or any paver manufacturer. What we do is match failed Oldcastle pavers, rebuild the base properly, and stand behind the repair in writing. If you’re also planning a kitchen, bathroom, or whole-home remodel alongside the driveway work, we handle that too. We work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone on the interior side, so the same crew that fixes your pavers can price your kitchen quartz.
Which Oldcastle Models This Applies To

Oldcastle manufactures paver lines under several names, but the ones we see most often in San Diego driveways are the Holland Stone, Plaza Stone, and the Belgard-affiliated series (Oldcastle and Belgard share a parent company, and many San Diego homes built 2005 – 2018 have Belgard pavers sold through Oldcastle distributors). The paver itself rarely “fails” in the way a mechanical part fails. What fails is the installation: the sand bedding, the gravel base, or the edge restraint. The pavers themselves are usually reusable unless they’ve cracked from vehicle weight over a void underneath.
The compatibility gotcha with Oldcastle pavers is thickness. Driveway-rated Oldcastle pavers are 60mm or 80mm thick. Patio pavers are often 40mm, and if a previous contractor laid 40mm pavers on a driveway, they’ll crack under repeated car weight within a few seasons. Before we quote a repair, we measure the paver thickness. We also look for the manufacturer stamp on the underside; Oldcastle stamps include a mold code you can photograph and send to us. If the pavers are salvageable, we re-lay them. If they’re cracked or too thin for a driveway, we recommend a full replacement with an appropriate paver.
On the OEM-vs-aftermarket question: there isn’t a meaningful “OEM part” market for concrete pavers the way there is for appliances. The decision is whether to reuse what’s there or replace with a matching or complementary paver. Oldcastle color blends like Harvest Blend, Sierra Blend, and Charcoal are still widely available through San Diego masonry yards. If a color is discontinued, we find the closest current match and show you a laid sample before ordering a full pallet.

Signs Your Oldcastle Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Water pooling in low spots after rain. The base layer has settled or washed out under the pavers, and the surface is no longer shedding water the way it did when new. In San Diego’s wet winters, this gets worse every storm.
- A paver that rocks when you step on it. The sand bedding has migrated out from under the paver, usually through a failed edge restraint. Left alone, the rocking paver works loose its neighbors.
- Edge rows separating from the border. The plastic or concrete edge restraint wasn’t staked deeply enough, or was never installed. Once the edge fails, the whole field starts drifting outward.
- Hairline cracks spreading across single pavers. A void opened up underneath, or the pavers are too thin for driveway loads. One cracked paver is a spot repair; a pattern of cracks across many pavers points to a base problem.
- Weeds sprouting through the joints. Polymeric sand has broken down or was never used. This is a maintenance item, but it also signals that water is getting through the joints and eroding the base from the top down.
None of these are cosmetic-only. Each one means water is entering the paver system where water shouldn’t be. In San Diego’s clay-heavy soil zones (parts of Clairemont, La Mesa, and inland Chula Vista), the freeze-thaw cycle is a non-issue, but expansive clay swells with winter moisture and shrinks in summer. That movement is what destroys poorly built paver bases here.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Paver driveway installation in San Diego runs $8,260 – $21,240 for a full replacement. A spot repair, where we pull a failed section of 50 – 150 square feet, re-grade the base, and re-lay the salvaged pavers, runs $825 – $3,500. The biggest cost drivers are square footage, paver thickness, access to the site, and how much of the base has to be rebuilt from scratch. If tree roots have lifted a section, root removal and root barrier add to the price.
- Spot repair (50 – 150 sq ft): $825 – $3,500
- Full paver driveway replacement: $8,260 – $21,240
- Paver patio installation: $4,130 – $12,980
- Base rebuild (gravel, sand, compaction): included in the per-square-foot price, never a separate line item
Every quote we write includes the parts, the labor, the haul-away, and the base work in one number. If we find hidden damage after we start, we stop and talk to you before spending another dollar. The price we put in writing before work starts is the price you pay unless you approve a change. And every repair is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the pavers we re-laid fail inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing, not just in conversation.
DIY or Call Us?
There are things worth checking yourself before you call anyone. Walk the driveway after a rain and mark where water pools. Check the edges for gaps between the paver field and whatever borders it. Pry up one rocking paver and look at the sand underneath, if the sand is gone or thin, the base is migrating. Those observations help us quote accurately over the phone.
Where DIY goes wrong is tempting: pulling up a section, adding a few bags of sand from the home center, and tamping the pavers back down. If the gravel base underneath has failed, the repair lasts weeks, not years. Sand alone doesn’t fix a base problem. If the pavers are on a slope, the stability of the re-laid field matters, and a poorly compacted slope section can shift and create a trip hazard. For anything beyond pulling weeds and sweeping in fresh polymeric sand, call us at (619) 604-9624. The estimate is free, and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s a repair or a replacement.
FAQs

A properly installed paver driveway with a compacted gravel base and good edge restraint lasts 25 – 40 years in San Diego’s climate. The pavers themselves can outlast that. What shortens the life is a thin base, a missing edge restraint, or using patio-thickness pavers under car traffic. We measure and inspect before we quote, so you’ll know if the base was built right the first time. Call (619) 604-9624 to schedule a look.
Yes, as long as the base is sound under the rest of the driveway and the pavers are still available or matchable. We pull the bad section, re-grade and re-compact the base, and re-lay. If the pavers are cracked, we source matches from San Diego masonry yards. If the base has failed across most of the driveway, a spot repair just pushes the problem to the next section. We’ll show you what we find before we recommend one path or the other.
Most spot repairs take one to two days on site. A full driveway replacement runs three to five days depending on square footage and access. We give you a defined arrival window and we hit it. The site is left clean, with extra pavers stacked neatly for future repairs if you want them.
We don’t warehouse pavers, but we source from the same San Diego masonry yards that supply Oldcastle and Belgard products, and most common colors and sizes are available within a few days. For a spot repair, we pull a sample from your driveway and match it before ordering. For a full replacement, we’ll show you the laid options so there are no color surprises. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll walk you through it. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.
If your driveway has held up well but the kitchen hasn’t, we’d also be glad to price that remodel for you. We install KraftMaid and Wellborn cabinetry, Cambria and Silestone countertops, and Kohler and Moen fixtures. One written price for the driveway, one for the kitchen, no markup games on either. We’re a Kingswell company, and we’ve been operating to The Kingswell Way since 2004: say the price before the work, show up in the window we gave, and leave the place cleaner than we found it. Trevor Nash leads our San Diego operation, and every one of our technicians is background-checked, uniformed, and held to that same standard.
