Kohler Driveway & Pavers: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
If you’re searching for Kohler driveway and pavers in San Diego, you likely already know Kohler builds more than faucets. Their outdoor paver and hardscape lines, including the Kohler Home Generators enclosure pads and select patio systems, are popular in San Diego backyards from Rancho Bernardo to Chula Vista. A failing paver base or cracked driveway section typically runs $4,130 – $21,240 to replace in San Diego depending on square footage and whether we’re repairing a section or pulling the whole base. Most homeowners discover the problem the same way: a paver sinks after a winter rain, a crack spreads across the drive, or the sand between joints washes out faster than it should.
Which Kohler Models This Applies To

Let’s be clear about what we mean by Kohler driveway and pavers. Kohler doesn’t manufacture interlocking concrete pavers the way Belgard or Unilock do. What we see in San Diego is homeowners with Kohler outdoor products – generator pads, outdoor kitchen surrounds, or Kohler-branded concrete systems – where the paving around them fails. The Kohler generator pad, for instance, is a precast concrete slab that sits on compacted base. If that base shifts, the pad tilts, and the surrounding pavers follow.
The compatibility gotcha here: Kohler generator pads have specific dimensional requirements. The pad must be level within 1/8 inch over its full span, and the base underneath needs to be deeper than a standard paver walkway because of the vibration load. If you have a Kohler 20kW or 26kW home standby unit, the pad is typically 36 inches by 48 inches. The pavers around it need to tie into that height without creating a lip. We see homeowners in San Diego’s clay-heavy neighborhoods east of the 15 – Scripps Ranch, Poway, Rancho Peñasquitos – fight this constantly because clay expands and contracts with moisture, more than coastal sand does.
For the pavers themselves, we stock OEM-compatible replacements from Belgard and Unilock, which carry their own structural warranties. The OEM versus aftermarket question matters less for pavers than it does for plumbing fixtures. What matters is whether the paver meets the compressive strength of the original – you want 8,000 PSI minimum for driveway use. We also keep KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone in our material lineup for indoor work, but for outdoor hardscape, it’s Belgard and Unilock.

Signs Your Kohler Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Sunken pavers near the generator pad or along the drive edge. This usually means the base layer – the compacted aggregate under the pavers – has eroded or was never deep enough. In San Diego, clay soil movement is the most common cause we find.
- Cracks running through multiple pavers in a line. A crack that jumps from paver to paver in a straight line means the base underneath is shifting, not that the individual paver failed. Replacing one paver won’t fix it.
- Sand washing out between joints after every rain. San Diego’s rain comes in short, hard bursts. If your joint sand keeps disappearing, the edge restraint has failed and the whole field is slowly spreading outward.
- Water pooling against the house or garage slab. Pavers should slope away from the structure at 1/4 inch per foot. When the base settles, the slope reverses, and water starts finding its way where it shouldn’t.
- A tilting Kohler generator pad. This is the one that gets expensive if ignored. A tilted pad puts uneven load on the generator, which can cause vibration issues over time. The fix is pulling the pad, re-compacting the base, and re-setting it level.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For paver driveway installation in San Diego, expect $8,260 – $21,240 depending on square footage, access, and whether we’re re-using your existing base or hauling it out and rebuilding from scratch. A partial repair – say a 200-square-foot section where the base failed – runs closer to $4,130 – $7,000. Driveway replacement with new pavers and full base rebuild lands between $5,900 – $16,520. The biggest driver is depth: a proper paver base in San Diego needs 4 – 6 inches of compacted Class II aggregate plus 1 inch of bedding sand. Contractors who skip the depth are why pavers fail in three years.

DIY or Call Us?
You can re-sand joints yourself – a bag of polymeric sand runs about $25 – $40 and it’s a weekend job. You can also check your edge restraint by walking the perimeter and looking for exposed or bent metal strips. What you shouldn’t do is pull a Kohler generator pad or lift a paver field without checking the base. The danger isn’t the paver – it’s the unknown under it. We’ve pulled pavers in San Diego and found broken irrigation lines, shallow gas lines, and once, a rattlesnake denning under a warm pad in Rancho Santa Fe. No joke. Base failure requires a plate compactor, proper aggregate, and knowing what you’re digging into. If the base is bad, call us at (619) 604-9624. We’ll tell you what it costs before we touch anything.
FAQs

A properly installed paver driveway in San Diego should last 25 – 30 years with re-sanding every 3 – 5 years. The pavers themselves rarely fail. It’s always the base. If your base was compacted at the right depth, the system outlasts concrete in San Diego’s soil conditions.
Individual cracked pavers can be swapped in an hour. A sunken section usually means base failure, and that requires pulling the pavers in that area, re-compacting, and re-setting. A good rule: if one paver is cracked, replace it. If a whole section is sinking, the repair is under it, not on top of it. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll tell you honestly which one you’re dealing with.
Most driveway paver replacements in San Diego take 2 – 4 working days. Partial repairs are often done in one day. Weather rarely delays us here, but access – narrow side yards, retaining walls, gates – can add time. You’ll get a written schedule before we start.
We keep common Belgard and Unilock pavers available through our suppliers in San Diego with 1 – 3 day lead times on most colors. If you have a discontinued or older Kohler-matched paver, we’ll source a compatible match and set a sample next to your existing field before anyone installs anything. You won’t pay for pavers you haven’t seen next to your own driveway.
