IKO Roofing: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
We stock and install IKO-compatible roofing materials across San Diego, and a full roof replacement using IKO shingles typically runs $9,440 to $23,600 depending on roof size, pitch, and tear-off needs. For smaller IKO roof repairs, most San Diego homeowners pay between $470 and $2,125. If your IKO shingles are curling, losing granules, or showing water stains inside the house, you’re likely looking at either a targeted repair or a full replacement – and we’ll give you a written number for either before any work starts.
Most IKO roof failures in San Diego show up the same way: you notice a water spot on the ceiling after January rains, or you spot granule buildup in the gutters after a windy stretch. IKO’s fiberglass asphalt shingles are solid products, but our coastal sun and the thermal swing between hot days and cool nights put real stress on any asphalt shingle. When the sealant strips break down, shingles lift. When the asphalt binder oxidizes, granules wash off. Both are normal wear, not product defects – and both are fixable.
Which IKO Models This Applies To

IKO makes three main shingle lines you’ll find on San Diego roofs: the Dynasty series (laminated architectural shingles, the most common on mid-range homes), the Cambridge series (also architectural, slightly shorter exposure and a different color palette), and the Marathon series (three-tab, now largely replaced by architectural lines on newer installs). IKO also produces Nordic performance shingles rated for high-wind zones, which sometimes show up on newer builds in East County.
The compatibility gotcha with IKO is that sealant strip patterns and nail-line positions differ between Dynasty and Cambridge, so you can’t mix rows mid-roof without visible lippage and potential water intrusion. If we’re doing a partial replacement, matching the exact series matters more than matching the color from a brochure. Check the back of any leftover shingle bundle in your garage – the wrapper lists the series, color code, and manufacture plant. If you don’t have wrappers, we’ll pull a shingle and read the nail line pattern to identify the series. For San Diego roofs with IKO shingles past year 18 or so, I typically recommend against OEM-exact replacement anyway – quality aftermarket architectural shingles from the same performance class install cleaner and look more uniform than patching old stock.

Signs Your IKO Roofing Is Failing
- Granule loss in gutters or downspouts. Asphalt shingles shed granules as the binder oxidizes. Some loss is normal, but a pile of granules the size of a dinner plate after rain means the shingle mat is exposed and UV is doing fast work now.
- Curling or cupping at shingle edges. This is almost always a ventilation problem or age-related moisture absorption. In San Diego’s marine layer zones like Point Loma and Ocean Beach, moisture works into the mat faster than on inland roofs, and curling typically starts at the eaves.
- Water stains on ceilings or upper wall corners. By the time you see this, water has passed the underlayment, which for IKO roofs from 2008-2015 often means the deck or felt has reached its service limit too.
- Lifted shingles after wind events. IKO’s sealant strips engage with heat. When they fail – usually year 14 to 20 here – Santa Ana winds start lifting corners. If you see daylight under shingle edges, water will follow during the next storm.
- Dark streaks or moss growth on north-facing slopes. The oak canopy and shaded valleys in places like Mission Hills keep roofs damp long enough for biological growth, which holds moisture against the shingle and shortens IKO lifespan by several years.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Diego, a full IKO roof replacement on a typical 1,800-square-foot single-story home runs $9,440 to $23,600. The range hinges on tear-off (one layer vs. two), roof pitch (anything steeper than 6/12 costs more in labor), deck repairs, and whether you need new underlayment and flashing. Targeted IKO repairs – replacing a damaged section, resealing lifted shingles, or fixing flashing – run $470 to $2,125 depending on how much material and access time the job takes.
Every quote we give in San Diego includes tear-off and disposal, underlayment, IKO-compatible shingles or a matching architectural equivalent, ridge caps, and all new flashing at penetrations. We write the price before we start and the number on day one is the number on the invoice. If the roof leaks inside the 365-day window, we come back and fix it at no charge – that’s our 365-Day Done Right Promise, in writing on every job.
DIY or Call Us?
Walking a roof in San Diego is not a casual Saturday project. Steep pitches, tile-over-shingle tear-offs in older neighborhoods, and rain-slick surfaces put a lot of homeowners in the ER every year. What you can safely do: check gutters for granules, look for lifted shingle corners from ground level with binoculars, and inspect attic sheathing for water stains on a dry day. What you should not do: climb onto a two-story roof with a caulk gun. I say that from two decades of running crews across San Diego, not from a safety brochure.
If you can see the problem from the ground and it’s one or two shingles on a low slope, a careful homeowner with a flat bar and roofing nails can handle it. But any leak, any flashing issue, or anything on a roof steeper than 4/12 deserves a pro. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll schedule a free inspection and a written quote.
FAQs

IKO architectural shingles typically last 18 to 25 years in San Diego’s coastal climate, while the older three-tab Marathon line usually runs 15 to 20 years. Our intense UV and the marine layer’s moisture cycle break down the asphalt binder faster than the manufacturer’s 30-year warranty implies. If your roof is past year 18 and showing granule loss, start budgeting for replacement. Call (619) 604-9624 for a free inspection and we’ll tell you what’s left in your roof.
Yes, if the underlying mat and sealant system are still sound – typically in the first 10 to 12 years of the roof’s life. Small punctures, lifted shingles, and flashing leaks are routinely repairable for $470 to $2,125 in San Diego. Once the shingles have lost significant granules and the mat is visible, repair becomes a losing proposition. Call us for an honest assessment – we’ll show you photos and give you a written repair quote if a repair makes sense.
Most full IKO tear-offs and replacements in San Diego take 2 to 4 working days for an average single-story home, and 4 to 6 days for a two-story or a roof with steep pitches and multiple valleys. Deck repairs or a second tear-off layer add a day. We give you a defined arrival window before we start and a clean job site when we leave – the Kingswell standard on every project.
We keep common IKO Dynasty and Cambridge color runs in stock for repair work, and we order full replacement materials through our supplier network ahead of your scheduled tear-off. If you need an exact match for a partial repair, we’ll verify the series and color code against your remaining bundle before we order. Same- or next-day ordering is standard for anything we do on a roof in San Diego.
