CGI Driveway & Pavers: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
We stock, match, and install CGI-compatible driveway and paver components across San Diego, with most paver driveway work running $8,260 – $21,240 depending on square footage, base condition, and paver line. If you have a failed section, a sinking edge, or a cracked border course, we can usually diagnose it in one visit and give you a written price before any work starts. Most owners discover the problem the way you probably did: a paver that rocks underfoot, a low spot that holds water after rain, or an edge that’s started to wander into the lawn.
CGI, also known as California Groundbreakers Inc., supplies pavers and driveway systems through landscape and hardscape yards across Southern California. We’re an independent contractor, not a CGI dealer, which means we can source both OEM CGI pavers and quality aftermarket equivalents and tell you honestly which one makes sense for your job. San Diego’s clay-heavy soils in neighborhoods like Clairemont, Tierrasanta, and Rancho Peñasquitos expand and contract with winter rains and summer drought, and that movement is what cracks paver joints and shifts base layers faster than the pavers themselves wear out.
Which CGI Models This Applies To

CGI’s paver line runs through several product families, and the right match depends on what’s already in your driveway. The most common CGI lines we see in San Diego driveways are their tumbled concrete pavers, their smooth-face architectural slabs, and their permeable paver systems, which some coastal communities like La Jolla and Point Loma require for stormwater runoff compliance.
To identify your paver, flip one over or check the pallet tag if you kept one. CGI pavers typically carry a molded or stamped identifier on the underside: a two- or three-letter code plus a size stamp in millimeters. Sizes matter more than the brand name here. A 60mm paver is rated for foot traffic and light vehicles. An 80mm paver handles full-size trucks and is what we specify for most San Diego driveways because it survives the occasional delivery truck and the seasonal soil shift better than the thinner stuff. If you’re matching an existing driveway, we’ll also need the color lot and tumbling level. Tumbled pavers age unevenly, and a brand-new paver from a different lot will show for a season or two before it blends in. We can usually source same-line replacements from CGI’s current catalog, but for discontinued colors we’ll show you aftermarket options that match within a shade or two. The honest answer: if it’s a small repair, matching matters. If you’re redoing the whole driveway, it matters less.

Signs Your CGI Driveway & Pavers Are Failing
- Rocking or loose pavers. When a paver moves under your foot, the sand joints have failed and the base beneath is no longer locking the pavers in place. Left alone, the loose paver becomes a trip hazard and the surrounding pavers start shifting next.
- Low spots that hold water after rain. San Diego’s wet season is short but intense. Puddling means the base material has settled unevenly, usually because it wasn’t compacted in lifts or because water is getting under the pavers and eroding the bedding sand.
- Edges spreading into the lawn or garden bed. The border course, the row of pavers along the outside edge, is the structural anchor for the whole driveway. If the edge restraint fails, the entire field starts to migrate outward and cracks open up along the border.
- Cracked or broken pavers in a diagonal line. A crack running diagonally across several pavers usually means a point load, often from a tire track, combined with a soft spot in the base. Replacing the individual pavers without fixing the base just means the new pavers crack again in six months.
- Weeds or ants pushing through the joints. Joint sand keeps water out and locks pavers together. When the sand is gone, weeds move in, ants excavate the base, and the driveway starts failing from underneath where you can’t see it until the surface dips.
If you’re seeing any two of these signs at once, the repair window is open and the cost is still manageable. Wait until the driveway visibly sags, and you’re usually into a partial or full re-base, not just a re-sand and re-set.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Diego, a paver driveway replacement runs $8,260 – $21,240, and the spread comes down to three drivers: square footage, base condition, and paver line. A standard two-car driveway in a neighborhood like Normal Heights or Bay Park might run $10,000 – $14,000 for tear-out, re-grading, a proper compacted base, new bedding sand, pavers, and joint sand. If the existing base is intact and we can salvage it, the number drops. If the base has turned to mush thanks to years of water intrusion, you’re paying for excavation and drainage correction too, and that pushes you toward the higher end.
Every quote includes tear-out and disposal, base prep, paver installation, edge restraint, joint sand, and final compaction. You’ll get a written price before we start, and that number is the number on the invoice. No change orders because a crew found something unexpected mid-dig. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something fails inside a year, we come back and make it right at no charge, including a free return visit for any repair that doesn’t hold.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect a few things on your own. Check whether the edge restraint is intact, look for standing water after rain, and walk the driveway to find rocking pavers. Those observations help us quote the job faster. What you shouldn’t do is pull up a section and re-lay it yourself. Paver work looks simple, but the failure is almost always underneath, in the base. If you re-set pavers on a failed base, you’ve spent a weekend making the problem look better while it gets worse underneath. For anything involving a full re-level, drainage correction, or a failing base, call a contractor who does this every week. We’ll tell you what you need, what it costs, and we’ll put it in writing before we touch a single paver. That’s the whole deal. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll set up the free estimate.
FAQs

A properly installed CGI paver driveway in San Diego typically lasts 25 to 40 years at the paver level, though the joint sand will need re-topping every 3 to 5 years and the base will need partial re-leveling every 10 to 15 depending on drainage and soil movement. Coastal salt air shortens the surface life slightly in places like Ocean Beach and Imperial Beach, but the real enemy is water under the pavers, not sun or salt. Call (619) 604-9624 for an inspection if your pavers are over 15 years old and showing edge wear.
Yes, a single cracked paver can be removed and swapped without touching the rest of the driveway, provided we can source a matching paver and the crack isn’t a symptom of a base failure. If the cracked paver is sitting on a soft spot, replacing the paver alone just gives you a new paver that cracks in the same place. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll come look before recommending anything.
Most residential paver driveway replacements in San Diego take two to four working days, including tear-out, base work, installation, and compaction. Larger driveways with significant base failure or drainage correction can run five to seven days. You’ll get a defined arrival window and a written schedule before we start, not a vague “sometime next week.” Call (619) 604-9624 for a job-specific timeline.
We keep a small selection of common CGI-compatible pavers on hand for repairs, but most full driveways are ordered per job to match your existing color lot and size. Ordering typically adds three to seven business days, and we’ll confirm availability and lead time in your written quote. If a color is discontinued, we’ll show you the closest current match or a quality aftermarket equivalent and let you decide. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll check availability while you’re on the phone.
