Cambridge Pavers Driveway & Pavers: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Cambridge Pavers-compatible driveway and paver materials across San Diego, with full driveway replacements typically running $5,900 – $16,520 and paver patio work landing between $4,130 and $12,980 depending on square footage, paver series, and what’s underneath. Most homeowners call us because a section of their driveway has settled, cracked, or started shifting, and they want to know whether to patch it or pull the whole thing up.

Here’s what we usually find: the pavers themselves rarely fail. What fails is what’s under them. In San Diego’s clay-heavy soil, especially through Clairemont and Mission Valley, the subgrade expands and contracts with the rain we do get, and that movement shows up as dips, edge separation, or pavers that have sunk an inch below the rest of the run. Sometimes it’s a broken edge piece from a delivery truck or a tree root pushing up from underneath.

This page covers what Cambridge Pavers products we work with, what actually goes wrong, what a fix costs, and when you should probably not do this yourself.

Which Cambridge Pavers Models This Applies To

Cambridge Pavers manufactures several paver lines with different dimensions and profiles. The ones we see most often on San Diego driveways and patios include the Ledgestone, RoundTable, and Sherwood collections, along with their permeable paver option for homeowners dealing with drainage issues on sloped lots.

Here’s what matters for compatibility: Cambridge Pavers are modular, meaning the specific sizes are designed to interlock in repeating patterns. A Ledgestone kit uses pieces in three, six, and twelve-inch widths clipped together in a herringbone or running-bond layout. If you’re trying to match an existing section, you need the exact series, because a RoundTable unit will not seat cleanly against a Ledgestone unit. The piece dimensions and the joining geometry are different.

We treat Cambridge Pavers as the OEM spec. There are aftermarket pavers in San Diego that mimic the color and general size, but the interlocks are never exactly the same, and the concrete blend often ages differently under coastal salt air. For repairs where a section stays visible next to the original, we recommend OEM. For a full replacement, you have more latitude, and that conversation usually comes down to whether we’re matching a front walkway or starting clean.

Penhallow Remodeling San Diego is an independent contractor. We’re not affiliated with Cambridge Pavers, but we source their products through the same regional distributors that supply most of San Diego County, so lead times and color availability are predictable.

Signs Your Cambridge Pavers Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Settled or sunken pavers in a low spot. This usually means the base layer under that section has washed out or was never compacted properly. In San Diego, we see this most after a heavy rain year, when water finds a path under the edge and erodes the bedding sand.
  • Pavers separating at the edges. Edge restraint failure. Without a solid border holding the outside row, the whole field starts to drift outward. It starts subtle, then you get a half-inch gap that lets the whole pattern migrate.
  • Cracked pavers in the middle of the driveway. Almost always weight-related. A delivery truck, an RV, or repeated parking in the same spot with a base that was marginal to begin with. The paver takes the point load and snaps.
  • Water pooling in one area with no obvious low spot. The subgrade has settled unevenly underneath. The surface looks flat until you get a hard rain, and then the water tells you exactly where the base is no longer holding.
  • White, chalky residue across the pavers. Efflorescence, which is common with concrete pavers near the coast. It’s not structural failure, but it tells you water is moving through the paver rather than around it, which means the drainage below needs attention.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A finished basement family room with a media wall and wet bar

For a full driveway replacement using Cambridge Pavers in San Diego, expect $5,900 – $16,520. A paver patio runs $4,130 – $12,980. The range is driven almost entirely by two things: square footage and what we find when we pull the old surface off.

Here’s the honest breakdown. If the existing base is still compacted and we’re replacing pavers only, that’s the bottom of the range. If we find a failed base, which happens more often than not on older San Diego homes, we have to excavate, haul, reinstall crushed rock, compact in lifts, and then lay the pavers. That’s legitimately a different job, and it’s why we write the price after we see what’s underneath, not before.

Every quote includes tear-out and disposal of the old material, base preparation, bedding sand, the Cambridge Pavers themselves, edge restraint, and joint sand compaction. We give you a written price before any work starts, and the number you approve is the number on the invoice. The work is covered under our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If something fails in the first year, we come back and fix it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

If you have a single cracked paver that’s not in a load-bearing path, swapping it out is reasonable. Lift it with a pry bar, check the sand underneath, drop the new one in, and top-dress the joints. It’s a Saturday morning job.

Where DIY goes wrong is when pavers have settled or spread. You can’t fix a failing base by adding sand on top or re-seating a few pieces. That works for about a month, and then the same dip comes back because the problem was never the paver. The job is excavation and re-compaction, and for that you need the equipment and the eye to get the grade right so water moves away from the foundation.

And to be clear: this is not a dangerous job in the way a garage door spring or an electrical panel is. The risk here is more practical. You’ll spend a weekend, rent a compactor, buy materials, and if the base prep isn’t right, you’ll pay someone like us to redo it in eighteen months. Trevor Nash would tell you the same thing sitting at your kitchen table.

“Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.”

Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll come out, look at the driveway, and hand you a written price before you commit to anything.
