Cambria Fence Installation: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

Cambria fence installation in San Diego typically runs $4,130 to $10,620 depending on linear footage, existing post condition, and whether old fence removal is part of the job. We stock Cambria-compatible components and can usually complete a standard residential fence installation within one to three working days once materials are on site. Most owners discover their Cambria fence has failed when a panel starts leaning after a winter storm, a gate drags against the latch side, or hairline cracks spread through the post bases after a few seasons of sun and salt air.

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already noticed the problem. Cambria makes solid product lines, but even the best fence systems wear differently in San Diego’s coastal climate than they do inland. Salt moisture, hard-packed clay, and the occasional Santa Ana wind gust put real stress on posts, rails, and fasteners. What looked like a minor lean in March can turn into a gate that won’t close by June. The good news is that a Cambria fence is a repairable system when you know which component failed and why.

Which Cambria Models This Applies To

Cambria’s residential fence lineup breaks into a handful of recognizable series, and the installation approach changes depending on which one you have. The most common in San Diego backyards are the Cambria Pro Series, Cambria Estate Series, and the older Cambria Classic line, which predates the current hardware spec. The quickest way to identify your model is to check the inside face of a post cap or the top rail channel: Cambria stamps a product code there, usually a three-letter prefix followed by a number. If the stamp has faded, measure the post width. Pro Series posts run 4×4 nominal with a wall thickness of 0.080 to 0.095 inches; Estate Series uses 5×5 posts with a heavier 0.110-inch wall. The Classic line is thinner, and that matters because Classic posts are the most likely to fail at the base after 10-plus years.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for structural posts and rails, we recommend OEM Cambria components. They’re engineered to fit the existing panel profile, and mixing a generic post into an Estate Series run almost always leaves a visible seam or a wobble at the rail connection. For fasteners and gate hardware, quality aftermarket equivalents from brands like Simpson Strong-Tie perform as well as OEM and often cost 20 to 30 percent less. Trevor Nash will tell you the same thing on a walkthrough: spend the money on the posts and rails, save on the brackets and screws, and don’t mix series within one fence line.

Signs Your Cambria Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Leaning posts after rain. Water saturates the clay-heavy soil in areas like Clairemont and Mira Mesa, and a post set without proper concrete collar or drainage stone starts to shift. One post leaning usually means the concrete was poured too shallow or the post wasn’t deep enough for the soil type.
  • Gate dragging or refusing to latch. This is almost always a post shifting outward under gate weight, not a hinge problem. The hinge-side post loses plumb, the gate sags, and the latch no longer lines up. Adjusting the hinges helps for a week, then it drags again.
  • Rust blooms at post bases or fasteners. Coastal air in Point Loma, Ocean Beach, and Coronado carries salt that eats through powder coating once it’s scratched. A rust bloom at the base of a post is often the first visible sign the post interior is corroding from standing water trapped inside.
  • Panels rattling or bowing between posts. Rail brackets fatigue over time, especially on fences that face the prevailing wind. A panel that rattles when you push against it means the bracket screws have loosened or the rail channel has deformed.
  • Hairline cracks through the post base. This is the signature failure of older Cambria Classic posts. Thermal expansion and contraction plus trapped moisture eventually cracks the extrusion at its weakest point, right where the post meets the concrete collar.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled kitchen with a waterfall island and wood cabinets

A full Cambria fence installation in San Diego runs $4,130 to $10,620, which includes materials, old fence removal and haul-away, concrete for post settings, and labor. At the lower end, you’re looking at a short run of 40 to 60 linear feet with straightforward access and good existing post holes. The upper end covers 100-plus linear feet, gate rebuilds, or runs where we’re cutting through tree roots and hardpan to set posts at proper depth.

What drives the number up: total linear footage, how many gates are in the run, whether the old fence needs a permit pull for removal in historic districts like parts of Mission Hills, and access. A fence line against a slope or retaining wall that requires hand digging instead of auger work adds labor hours. Every Penhallow quote includes a written line-item price before any work starts, and every Cambria fence installation carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. The number you sign on day one is the number on the invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check your own fence by pushing each post at chest height and watching for movement, checking gates for drag, and looking for rust blooms at the bases. Replacements are where DIY goes sideways. Removing a set fence post without damaging adjacent panels is frustrating work, and mixing new concrete with old collar remnants is how you end up with a post that leans again in eight months. If any post is set in concrete that’s cracked or heaved, you’re rebuilding that setting, not just patching it. Setting posts to the right depth for San Diego’s expansive clay means going below the moisture line, and doing that by hand on a 60-foot run is a long weekend that ends with a trip to urgent care for your back. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there. Call (619) 604-9624 for a free estimate.

FAQs

Installers leveling a new base cabinet during a kitchen remodel

How long does a Cambria fence last in San Diego?

A properly installed Cambria fence runs 15 to 20 years in San Diego’s climate, with posts set in concrete and drainage stone lasting longest. Coastal exposure within a few miles of the ocean can trim that to 12 to 15 years unless posts are sealed and fasteners are stainless. Call (619) 604-9624 to have us look at your existing fence line and tell you what’s realistic for your specific location.

Can you repair my Cambria fence instead of replacing it?

Yes, and roughly 60 percent of the Cambria fence work we do in San Diego is repair, not full replacement. If the posts are sound and the panels are intact, we replace the failed components, rail brackets, post caps, or gate hardware and leave the rest alone. Call (619) 604-9624 for a written quote on the repair scope, not a guess.

How long does a fence installation take?

Most standard Cambria fence installations in San Diego take one to three working days from the day we start. Removal of an old fence and setting new posts is the longest single day; panel installation and gate hanging follow quickly after the concrete cures enough to hold plumb.

Do you stock Cambria fence parts on the truck?

We stock common Cambria Pro and Estate Series post caps, rail brackets, gate hinges, and latch hardware on our service vehicles. Structural posts and rails are ordered per job so you get the correct series match for your existing fence line. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll tell you what we have and what we need to order.
