Bufftech Driveway & Pavers: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
If you have a Bufftech paver driveway, walkway, or patio and part of it has cracked, settled, or separated, you’re in the right place. We stock and install Bufftech-compatible driveway and paver components across San Diego, with most paver repairs running between $4,130 and $12,980 depending on square footage and what’s underneath. The typical call starts with a homeowner noticing one sunken edge by the garage, a cracked border paver, or a section that’s drifted and left a gap. What looks like a simple paver issue is usually a base or edging problem we can identify the first time we walk the job.
Which Bufftech Models This Applies To

Bufftech manufactures interlocking concrete pavers in two main product groups: Bufftech pavers (driveway or patio units) and Bufftech retaining wall systems. Most San Diego driveways we’re called to use the 3-piece paver systems in 60mm (2 3/8 inch) or 80mm (3 1/8 inch) thickness. The 80mm is what belongs under a driveway; the 60mm is a patio or walkway paver. We’ve seen homeowners install 60mm units on a drive and wonder why they crack, so that’s the first thing we check.
For replacement matching, look on the bottom of a pulled paver. Bufftech stamps a lot number, not always a color name, so if you can’t identify the color, we’ll pull a paver from a less visible spot, verify the dimensions with calipers, and match from there. Color matters more than most people expect: Bufftech’s color lots vary run to run, and a paver from a 2018 run won’t blend with a paver from the 2023 run. In San Diego’s constant sun, UV fade also lifts or mutes pigments differently on north and south exposures. We’ll tell you plainly if a seamless patch is realistic or whether replacing a whole section makes more sense.
OEM Bufftech pavers are discontinued in several San Diego supply houses, so we work with quality aftermarket equivalents that carry the same compressive strength (typically 8,000 psi or better) and dimensional tolerance. The honest conversation is this: an aftermarket paver will hold the load, but it won’t match a 12-year-old Bufftech color perfectly. If you want a perfect match, we’ll say so before you spend a dollar.

Signs Your Bufftech Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Sunken paver by the gutter or garage lip. This is almost always base failure, not paver failure. Water from San Diego’s winter rains saturates the sand, the base shifts, and the paver drops. You’ll usually see a slight dip before you feel it under a car tire.
- Cracked or chipped edge pieces. The edge paver takes the tire load when a car cuts the corner too tight. Once a border paver cracks, water gets between the units and starts eroding the sand joint, so the problem spreads outward from that one broken piece.
- Pavers that have shifted and left a thumb-width gap. Gaps mean the edge restraint has failed or the sand joint has washed out. In San Diego, our dry summers shrink the sand, and the first real rain pushes it out. We see this most often on sloped driveways in neighborhoods like Clairemont and Serra Mesa.
- Pavers that rock or wobble when you step on them. One rocking paver means the sand bed under that unit is gone. It might be an ant colony, a washed-out joint, or a thin base from the original installation. Either way, rocking pavers crack at the corners within a season.
- Standing water after rain. A properly pitched paver driveway should shed water within an hour. If you have a puddle that lingers, the pitch was never right or the base has settled. That water then weakens the sand joints, and the failure cycle accelerates.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we quote for Bufftech-compatible driveway and paver work in San Diego, installed, with materials and labor in the number:
- Paver driveway installation (new): $8,260 – $21,240
- Paver patio installation: $4,130 – $12,980
- Spot paver repair (5 – 20 units, base touchup): $945 – $2,360
- Sectional base repair (sunken area, re-compact, re-set): $2,360 – $4,720
- Edge restraint replacement and re-set: $1,180 – $2,950
The range comes down to three things: how far the base has degraded, whether we need to haul away old material, and whether we’re matching existing pavers or replacing the whole run. Matched-color patch jobs cost more per square foot than a full replacement because we’re hunting for the right piece. You get a written price before we dig, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise applies: if a paver we set shifts or settles inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing on every job.
DIY or Call Us?
You can pull a cracked paver with a couple of flathead screwdrivers, and if the sand bed underneath is still level, you can reset the same piece. That’s a fair weekend job. What’s not a weekend job is anything that needs a plate compactor. If the base has failed, if there’s a dip that spans more than three pavers, or if the edge restraint has pulled away, digging and compacting by hand won’t hold. We see homeowners spend two Saturdays on a patch that settles again by Christmas. The telling sign is if water pools or the pavers rock. Then you need the base rebuilt, not the paver swapped. If you’re not sure which problem you have, call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll tell you what we’d check over the phone before anyone drives out. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.
FAQs

A correctly installed Bufftech paver driveway should give you 25 to 30 years in San Diego’s climate before the base needs a re-set, and the pavers themselves usually outlast the base. What fails first here isn’t wear and tear, it’s the sand joint: dry summers pull moisture out, winter rains wash the sand through the gaps, and the base degrades from the top down. A re-sand every three to five years stretches the life further than most homeowners expect.
A cracked paver gets replaced, not glued. Concrete paver repair adhesives exist, but they show in San Diego sun within a season, and a glued paver will crack again at the same stress point. We pull the broken unit, check the base, and set a new paver from stock. Call (619) 604-9624 for a free estimate on the scope that actually applies.
A spot repair of up to 20 pavers is done in a day once we have the matching units. A sectional base repair takes one to two days because we excavate, re-compact, and then re-set. A full driveway replacement in San Diego typically runs three to five working days, weather permitting.
We keep common 80mm interlocking concrete pavers in tan, gray, and charcoal on our install trucks. Bufftech color-specific matches we order in, usually a two to five day lead in San Diego. We’ll confirm availability before we schedule so you’re never left with a torn-up driveway waiting on a color.
