Boxabl Driveway & Pavers: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Boxabl-compatible driveway and paver systems across San Diego, with most driveway paver installations running $8,260 – $21,240 depending on square footage, base conditions, and material choice. When a Boxabl driveway or paver run fails, owners typically find out after a rain: water pools where it didn’t before, a paver shifts underfoot, or the driveway edge starts crumbling into the yard. If you’re standing on a Boxabl site pad that’s cracked, heaved, or draining badly, that’s the part we replace – and we’ll give you a written number before we touch anything.
Which Boxabl Models This Applies To

Boxabl driveways and paver runs are site-built over the factory pad, which means the compatibility question isn’t about a specific Casita model year, it’s about what’s under the finish surface. Standard Boxabl builds ship with a compacted base and a poured perimeter, but the driveway surfacing and walkway pavers are spec’d and installed at the site level, often by whoever handled the initial setup. What matters for replacement is the base depth, the edge restraint condition, and whether the existing pavers are modular units (typically 3-1/8″ thick architectural pavers or 60mm interlocking units) or a poured concrete cap. Before we quote anything, we pull a few pavers to check the base: in San Diego, a driveway that was set over a 2″ base of sand-only has a completely different failure profile than one set over 4 – 6″ of compacted Class II road base.
On the OEM-vs-aftermarket decision, Boxabl itself doesn’t manufacture pavers or driveway surfacing, so “OEM” in this case usually means whatever the original site contractor spec’d. That’s actually good news: it means you’re not locked into a proprietary product, and we can match pavers from Belgard, Unilock, or Calstone in San Diego without a compatibility gamble. The aftermarket options are often more durable than whatever shipped with the initial install, especially on the edge restraint side.
As independent contractors, Penhallow Remodeling San Diego isn’t affiliated with Boxabl. We work on the site-built portions that factory spec doesn’t cover, and we warranty our paver and driveway work in writing.

Signs Your Boxabl Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Water pooling after light rain. This usually means the base has settled or the original install didn’t include enough slope. In San Diego’s clay-heavy Mission Valley soil, a base that wasn’t properly compacted will settle within the first two wet seasons and leave low spots that hold water against the pad’s edge.
- A paver edge that keeps separating from the driveway. Edge restraint failure is the most common Boxabl-adjacent problem we fix. Without a solid restraint (typically a concrete toe edge or a buried paver edging), the outside pavers walk outward under vehicle load, and the whole field starts to loosen.
- Pavers sinking or dipping near the pad. This is almost always a base problem, not a paver problem. If the original installer skimped on Class II road base or skipped mechanical compaction, the pavers sink, sometimes within the first year.
- Visible cracking at the driveway-to-pad transition. The Boxabl pad expands and contracts at a different rate than the adjacent driveway. Without a proper expansion joint, the two surfaces fight each other and the driveway concrete or pavers crack right at the joint.
- Weeds pushing through the joints every month. Joint sand wasn’t stabilized or the fabric layer wasn’t installed. San Diego’s year-round growing season means this never resolves on its own – once rhizomes get under the pavers, they keep coming back until you lift, clean, and reset.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Diego, paver driveway installation runs $8,260 – $21,240 depending on square footage, paver choice, and how much base reconstruction is needed. If the existing base is salvageable and we’re just pulling, cleaning, and resetting pavers, you’re at the lower end. If we’re digging out failed base, hauling it off, and building back from compacted road base up, you’re at the higher end. Concrete driveway work on a Boxabl site runs $5,310 – $14,160, and a full driveway replacement (remove and re-pour) sits at $5,900 – $16,520.
Every quote is written before work starts, and the number on that quote is the number on the invoice. No add-ons at the door. The quote lists parts and labor separately so you can see exactly what you’re paying for, and the work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and make it right at no charge, in writing. If a repair fails, the second visit is free – no service call, no re-inspection fee.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. A homeowner can safely check paver thickness with a tape measure, watch where water pools after a rain, and inspect the edge restraint where the driveway meets the yard. Those observations help you talk to us intelligently and help us give you a tighter number over the phone. What you shouldn’t do yourself is lift a full driveway field, re-compact base, or reset pavers over a failed substrate. The risk isn’t springs-and-tension level danger, but the failure mode is real: once you start pulling pavers, the base decompresses, and a DIY reset almost always fails again within a year because the compaction and slope weren’t right. The paver itself is not the hard part. The base is the hard part.
Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll walk the site, pull a few pavers, check the base, and hand you a written number.
FAQs

A properly installed paver driveway over compacted Class II base should last 25 – 30 years in San Diego before the pavers themselves need attention, though the joints need re-sanding every 3 – 5 years. The catch is that most Boxabl-adjacent driveway failures we see are base failures from the original install, not paver wear – and a failed base shortens the lifespan to 2 – 5 years. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll tell you which situation you have.
Yes, if the failure is isolated – a single dip, a loose edge, or a pooling low spot – we can pull the affected area, fix the base, and reset the pavers. If the whole field is shifting or the base was never properly compacted, a full lift-and-reset (or full replacement) is the honest fix, and we’ll show you why with pictures before you decide.
Most paver driveway replacements in San Diego take 3 – 5 working days from demo to final compaction, assuming we’re not fighting rain or a base that needs deep excavation. Concrete driveway replacement typically runs 5 – 7 days including cure time before vehicles can park on it. We’ll give you a written timeline with the quote.
We keep standard 60mm interlocking pavers and 3-1/8″ architectural pavers available through our San Diego suppliers – Belgard, Unilock, and Calstone – so we can usually start within a week of your go-ahead. For custom colors or a discontinued paver match, we’ll order and confirm availability before you commit. We also work with homeowners who need KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone parts for interior projects, though driveway and paver work is the focus for Boxabl sites.
