Belgard Kitchen Remodeling: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

Belgard kitchen remodeling in San Diego typically runs $16,520 – $53,100 depending on layout, cabinet line, and countertop material, and we stock Belgard-compatible pavers and outdoor kitchen components alongside our full kitchen remodeling scope. Most San Diego homeowners call us after a Belgard outdoor kitchen island has shifted, a paver counter base has settled, or the cabinetry surrounding a Belgard grill surround has warped from coastal moisture. The failure almost always traces back to one thing: the original install was done without the right substrate or drainage beneath the Belgard product.

Which Belgard Models This Applies To

We work with the full Belgard outdoor kitchen and paver line: the Bristol, Lafitt, and Catalina slab series for counter bases and grill surrounds, plus the Dimensions and Origins wall systems that often frame outdoor bars and prep stations. Here’s the compatibility gotcha that catches a lot of San Diego homeowners off guard: Belgard’s kitchen-specific components are sized around a 6-inch modular grid, meaning a Bristol slab won’t swap cleanly onto a Catalina base without recutting. The label on the underside of any Belgard slab tells you the series and batch, but if the label’s worn off you can measure the thickness. Catalina runs 2.5 inches thick, Bristol runs 2.25, and Lafitt comes in at 3 inches. Aftermarket equivalents exist and can save 20 – 30%, but we’re careful with them on kitchen counters since Belgard’s UV stabilizers are what keep the color from bleaching under San Diego sun.

Signs Your Belgard Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Paver counter slabs have shifted or lipped. This is almost always a settling base, not a bad paver. San Diego’s clay-heavy East County soils expand and contract through dry summers, and a base that wasn’t compacted in 4-inch lifts will eventually move.
  • Hairline cracks spider across the counter surface. Belgard pavers are dense, but they’re not flexible. If the concrete footing underneath wasn’t poured thick enough or the substrate wasn’t reinforced, the slab absorbs the stress and cracks.
  • Grill surround cabinetry smells musty or shows swelling. Coastal moisture in Point Loma and La Jolla gets behind anything that isn’t sealed with a proper backerboard and vented. The Belgard stone is fine; the framing behind it is what fails first.
  • Efflorescence: that white, chalky film on the stone. This happens when water moves through the paver and evaporates, leaving salt deposits behind. It’s not structural damage yet, but it tells you water is getting where it shouldn’t.
  • The bar or island rocks slightly when you lean on it. One corner has settled. In San Diego’s Poway and Scripps Ranch areas, we regularly see this on hillside builds where drainage wasn’t accounted for and water softened the base.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A small remodeled galley kitchen with cabinets to the ceiling

A Belgard kitchen remodel in San Diego lands between $16,520 and $53,100, and what drives that number up or down is almost always scale and material. A compact outdoor prep counter with a grill surround and Catalina slabs sits near the low end. A full outdoor kitchen with island, bar seating, built-in storage cabinetry, and countertops runs higher. Here’s the line-item reality:

  • Kitchen remodel (full scope): $16,520 – $53,100
  • Countertop installation: $2,360 – $7,670
  • Kitchen island installation: $3,540 – $11,800
  • Backsplash installation: $945 – $2,950
  • Cabinet installation: $4,720 – $15,340

Every Penhallow job gets a written price before we pull a single slab up. The number on day one is the number on the invoice. If the Belgard part fails inside 365 days, the 365-Day Done Right Promise means we come back and fix it at no charge. No re-inspection fee, no second service call. It’s in writing.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself: look for visible settling, check whether water pools against the base after rain, and note whether the Belgard slabs feel loose when you press on them. What you shouldn’t do is attempt to lift and reset large-format pavers or open up the cabinetry framing around a built-in grill. Belgard counter slabs for kitchens can weigh 90 pounds or more, and the gas line behind any built-in grill is not something to work around without killing the supply and pressure-testing afterward. A shifted slab dropped on a foot is a broken bone; a nicked gas line is worse. If you’re in San Diego and you’re not sure what you’re looking at, call (619) 604-9624. Trevor Nash grew up in Los Angeles and learned framing at LA Trade-Tech, and he’ll tell you what he sees without the theatrics. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.
