American Standard Home Additions & ADU: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
American Standard home additions and ADU construction in San Diego typically runs $53,100 – $153,400 for an addition and $106,200 – $259,600 for a detached ADU, depending on square footage, foundation work, and finish level. We’re a San Diego general contractor that builds additions and ADUs using American Standard fixtures and components, and we stock the common rough-in parts on our trucks so a supply delay doesn’t stall your framing inspection. Most owners call us after they’ve pulled the trigger on an addition or ADU and realize the plumbing fixtures, valves, and trim kits they picked are on backorder, or after a rough-in inspection gets flagged because the valve rough-in depth didn’t match the finish wall depth.
Which American Standard Models This Applies To
This guide covers the American Standard product lines we most often rough-in and trim out on San Diego additions and ADUs: the Champion 4 and Cadet 3 toilets, the Colony and Reliant shower valve families, and the Studio and Town Square tub and shower trim kits. The compatibility gotcha we see most often is this: American Standard makes both a “standard rough” and a “thin-wall rough” version of their pressure-balancing shower valves. If your ADU walls are framed with 2×4 studs and you’re using 1/2-inch drywall, the standard rough works. But if you’re doing a curbless shower with cement board substrate and a thicker tile assembly, you need the thin-wall rough adapter or the trim plate won’t seat flush against the finished wall. The valve body will feel tight when you test it before tile, then the escutcheon won’t compress the foam seal after tile goes up. That’s a $60 part that costs $400 to fix after the fact, because the tile has to come off around the valve. The model number is stamped on the brass valve body behind the plaster guard, and on the back of the trim plate. Before you buy any trim kit, match the valve model, not just the finish. A Town Square trim kit will not fit a Colony valve body, even though both are pressure-balancing valves American Standard sells.

Signs Your American Standard Home Addition or ADU Has a Failing Part
- Low flow at the tub spout or showerhead, especially in the morning. This usually means sediment from a new San Diego water line has collected in the cartridge or the check stops. New construction always has debris in the lines, and American Standard cartridges have fine inlet screens that clog fast.
- The shower valve won’t stop dripping after you close it. On American Standard pressure-balancing valves, this is most often a worn or twisted cartridge seal, not a bad ceramic disc. The cartridge is a $30 – $50 part, but the repair means shutting off the water and pulling the trim.
- Hot water temperature swings when someone flushes a toilet elsewhere in the ADU. This points to a failed pressure-balancing spool inside the cartridge. It’s the part that keeps the hot/cold ratio steady when another fixture draws water, and it’s the first thing to go with hard water.
- The toilet runs for 10-15 seconds after a flush, then stops. On Champion 4 units, this is typically the flush valve seal or the fill valve float sticking. It’s a $12 – $25 repair if you catch it early, but it wastes a lot of water in a city where water bills are already high.
- You hear a knocking sound in the wall when the shower shuts off. This is water hammer, and in new San Diego construction it’s usually a missing or undersized water hammer arrestor near the valve, not an American Standard defect. The fix is an arrestor, not a new valve.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For the American Standard parts themselves, here’s what we typically install in San Diego additions and ADUs, with installed price ranges:
- Shower valve cartridge replacement: $470 – $940 installed, including shut-off, cartridge, trim re-install, and testing.
- Toilet flush valve seal or fill valve replacement: $235 – $590 installed, including parts and cleanup.
- Full tub/shower trim kit replacement (Colony, Town Square, or Studio): $710 – $1,770 installed, depending on the trim level and whether the valve body needs a thin-wall adapter.
- Complete shower valve replacement (rough-in): $1,180 – $2,950 installed, if we have to open the wall and sweat in a new valve body or replace a failed rough-in.
What drives the range is access. If the valve is on an interior wall with no access panel, we cut an access panel behind it rather than opening tile. That’s the difference between a $500 repair and a $2,000 one. Every job gets a written price before we start, and every part we install carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the cartridge fails inside the year, we come back and replace it at no charge, no service call fee.

AfterDIY or Call Us?
Replacing a toilet fill valve or a shower cartridge is a common DIY job, and if you’re comfortable shutting off the water at the fixture stop and you have the right model number, American Standard parts are widely available at San Diego plumbing supply houses. The danger zone is anything that requires opening the wall around a pressure-balancing valve or sweating copper. You’re working around a pressurized water line, and if the solder joint fails inside a finished wall, the repair cost goes from hundreds to thousands. If the part is behind tile, call us. If you’ve already opened the wall and you’re looking at the valve body, call us before you touch it, we’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s a cartridge swap or a valve replacement. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there. Call (619) 604-9624 and a live person will answer.
FAQs

An American Standard shower cartridge typically lasts 8 – 12 years in San Diego, but hard water from Colorado River sources can shorten that to 5 – 7 years. If you’re on a well or unfiltered municipal supply, expect to replace the cartridge sooner. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll let you know if your symptoms match a cartridge issue or something else.
Yes, in most cases the cartridge or spool inside the American Standard valve can be replaced for under $1,000, and that fixes the leak or temperature swing. The valve body itself rarely fails unless it was installed wrong, but if it did freeze or crack, it has to be replaced. Call (619) 604-9624 for a straight answer before you spend money on parts that might not fix it.
A cartridge replacement or fill valve swap takes 45 – 90 minutes in most San Diego homes. A full valve replacement that requires opening the wall and soldering takes half a day. We’ll give you a written arrival window and a written price before we start, and we leave the job site cleaner than we found it.
We carry common American Standard cartridges, flush valve seals, fill valves, and thin-wall adapters on our trucks, along with compatible lines from KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for other parts of the job. If your model needs a specialty part, we source it from a San Diego supply house the same day and handle the pickup for you.
