James Hardie Driveway & Pavers: The San Diego Owner's Guide
When a San Diego homeowner calls us about James Hardie driveway and paver work, what they usually mean is a HardieBacker cement board application under concrete pavers or a HardiePanel substrate under a driveway-adjacent walkway, patio, or paver border. We install James Hardie-compatible substrate and paver systems in San Diego for $8,260 – $21,240 on a typical driveway, and we can usually get the materials matched and scheduled within the same week. The call typically starts the same way: a paver shifted, a crack ran through a walkway, or the board under an outdoor finish started swelling at the edge where sprinklers hit it.
Which James Hardie Models This Applies To
James Hardie doesn't make pavers themselves. What they make is the substrate board that sits under tile, stone, or paver-topped exterior surfaces: HardieBacker 1/4" cement board, HardieBacker 500, and HardiePanel fiber cement siding used as vertical skirting or backing along driveway-adjacent retaining walls. The compatibility gotcha most San Diego homeowners run into is thickness. HardieBacker 1/4" is for floors and countertops, but exterior paver applications over wood framing in San Diego almost always need the 1/2" board for stiffness, especially where driveway vibration and soil movement are in play. Check the board edge for the printed HardieBacker stamp. If it's gone, measure the exposed edge: 1/4" versus 1/2" is the first thing we check before quoting. For paver borders and walkway edging, we also see HardiePanel 4×8 sheets used as a backer behind stone veneer, and those have a distinct smooth face and a fiber-cement edge that won't fray like gypsum. Penhallow Remodeling San Diego is an independent contractor, not affiliated with James Hardie, but we source genuine Hardie board from our local supplier and match aftermarket paver brands like Belgard and Unilock against it when the job calls for them.

Signs Your James Hardie Driveway & Pavers Are Failing
- A paver rocks underfoot near the garage apron. This is usually a base-settlement problem, not the paver itself. In San Diego's clay-heavy inland soils, winter rain expands the ground and summer drought shrinks it, which loosens the sand bed under the paver. The paver tilts, water pools, and the cycle accelerates.
- The cement board edge is swelling or crumbling where it meets concrete. HardieBacker is moisture-resistant, not waterproof. Repeated splash contact from a downspout or sprinkler head will eventually soften the edge. This is the most common James Hardie-specific failure we see in San Diego, and it usually shows up first near the driveway edge or a planter bed.
- Efflorescence, that white chalky film, won't stay gone. It's not cosmetic. Water is moving through the paver or the board behind it and carrying salts to the surface. Sealing over it without fixing the moisture path means it comes back in six months.
- Hairline cracks running in a straight line across a walkway. Straight cracks usually follow a seam in the board underneath. If the installer didn't stagger board joints or left a gap too tight, thermal expansion in San Diego's sun loads will telegraph that seam right up through the surface.
- A hollow sound when you tap a paver with a broom handle. That means the paver has separated from its setting bed. It's not dangerous yet, but it will be the first paver to crack under a delivery truck or a heavy SUV.

AfterReplacement Cost & What's Included
A full paver driveway installation in San Diego runs $8,260 – $21,240, and a smaller paver patio or walkway redo typically lands between $4,130 and $12,980. What drives the number: total square footage, whether we're replacing the aggregate base or reusing it, the paver brand you choose, and whether any of the Hardie substrate needs to come out. Every quote from Penhallow Remodeling San Diego includes a written line-item price before work starts, so you see the paver cost, the base material, the labor, and the haul-away as separate numbers. We also put the 365-Day Done Right Promise on every driveway and paver job in writing. If something shifts or fails within the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge, no re-inspection fee, no argument.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check two things without touching a tool: whether water is pooling against any Hardie board edge, and whether you can find the HardieBacker stamp on an exposed edge. That helps us quote faster over the phone. What we would not recommend is pulling up pavers over cement board yourself. Cutting fiber cement releases silica dust, and unless you have the right blade and a proper respirator, that is not a weekend project. The same goes for re-compacting a failed base under a driveway: you need a plate compactor and you need to know what caused the settlement in the first place, otherwise you will re-lay the same pavers over the same problem. Trevor Nash has been running remodeling and exterior crews in San Diego long enough to know that the surest way to double the cost of a paver job is to fix a DIY attempt first. Call (619) 604-9624 and we will give you a written number before anything gets pulled up.
FAQs

A properly installed HardieBacker substrate under pavers should last 25 to 35 years in San Diego's climate, but the pavers themselves and the sand jointing typically need attention every 7 to 12 years depending on drainage and traffic. The board rarely fails on its own; it fails when water is allowed to sit against it. Get the drainage right and the whole system lasts decades. Call (619) 604-9624 for an exact assessment of your driveway.
Yes, in most cases we can replace a failed section of base, re-lay the original pavers if they are intact, and re-seal the joints without pulling up the entire driveway. The exception is when the original pavers are discontinued or the settlement extends under the whole slab. We will tell you which situation you have before quoting, because the written price depends on it.
A typical San Diego paver driveway replacement over new Hardie substrate takes 3 to 6 working days from removal to final compaction, weather permitting. Smaller walkway and patio jobs are usually 1 to 3 days. We give you a defined arrival window in writing before the crew shows up, and the site gets left cleaner than we found it.
We keep HardieBacker 1/4" and 1/2" board on the truck for standard repairs, and our San Diego paver suppliers stock Belgard and Unilock lines locally, so most jobs are not waiting on freight. If you want a specific paver color or a non-stock Hardie panel, we order it and give you the lead time in the written quote. You will also see brands like KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone referenced across our other remodeling work, but for exterior paver and substrate jobs, Hardie board plus Belgard or Unilock is the pairing we trust most in this market.
