James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
James Hardie bathroom remodeling in San Diego typically runs $10,620 – $33,040, and most full tear-outs are completed in two to four weeks. We stock James Hardie HardieBacker cement board, HardieBacker screws, and seam tape on the truck, so when your shower walls start flexing or tile grout keeps cracking, we can diagnose the substrate failure and get you a written price the same day. Most San Diego homeowners call us after noticing a tile shift, soft spots behind the shower wall, or repeated re-caulking that never quite holds. The problem is rarely the tile. It’s what sits behind it.
Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

In bathrooms, the James Hardie product at play is almost always HardieBacker cement board, and two versions matter here. The half-inch board is for walls and ceilings, while the quarter-inch board is for floors and countertops. Check the stamp on any exposed board edge before you plan around it. A Get the inches wrong and your finished tile sits proud of the surrounding drywall, which is one of the most common framing mistakes we correct in San Diego homes from the 1970s through early 2000s.
The OEM versus aftermarket question for HardieBacker comes down to fasteners and tape. James Hardie ships matched screws with wider heads that sit flush without tearing the board face. Generic drywall screws countersink too deep and crack the core. The seam tape is alkaline-resistant, and that matters because cement board is caustic. Regular mesh tape degrades inside a year. We use HardieBacker-branded screws, tape, and the board itself on every bathroom remodel, because failure at the fastener is a failure pattern we refuse to repeat.

Signs Your James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Grout keeps cracking along the same lines. This usually means the backer board behind it is flexing at a seam that was never taped or was taped with the wrong mesh. The tile is simply moving with the board.
- A shower wall tile sounds hollow when you knock on it. Hollow sound means the thinset bond between tile and board has released. In a shower, that release lets moisture sit directly against the HardieBacker surface, which then wicks into the edges.
- Soft spots or visible swelling at the bottom edge of the shower. Moisture is getting past the board seam. HardieBacker is water-resistant, not waterproof. The waterproofing layer behind it, usually a membrane or roll-on barrier, has failed or was never installed. We see this most in San Diego houses where a previous owner did a weekend-flip shower.
- Mold staining that keeps coming back after bleach. The mold is feeding in the wall cavity, not on the surface. Cleaning the tile can’t reach it. The board and insulation behind it need to come out.
- Loose or popping screws under floor tile. Quarter-inch HardieBacker fastened with drywall screws will work itself loose as the screw heads crush the core. You’ll hear it before you see it, a faint creak underfoot near the vanity.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A full James Hardie bathroom remodel in San Diego runs $10,620 – $33,040. A smaller guest bath with a standard tub surround generally lands between $5,900 and $14,160, while a walk-in shower with new HardieBacker walls, pan, and tile runs $5,310 – $14,160. The spread comes from square footage of board, whether we’re replacing floor or walls, and what waterproofing system goes behind the board.
We price parts and labor separately on every written quote. The board itself is inexpensive. The labor to pull tile, cut board to fit, seat screws at the correct spacing, tape every seam, and roll on waterproofing is where the time goes, and time is the honest cost in any remodel. Every bathroom we open gets a written price before demo day, and a written 365-Day Done Right Promise that if the work fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. Nothing gets hidden behind a change order.

You can check a few things safely. Pull the escutcheon plate off the shower valve and look at the board edge. If it’s soft, crumbling, or black, the board is saturated. You can also press firmly on tiles near the bottom of the shower. Movement is the symptom that matters. But pulling board off a wall is demolition, not a weekend project, and cutting HardieBacker requires carbide blades, proper dust control, and a respirator. The silica dust from cement board is not something to inhale in a closed San Diego bathroom. If the board behind your shower is compromised, the waterproofing is already gone. Call us at (619) 604-9624 and we’ll tell you what we see, what it costs, and what we’d do if it were our own house. Trevor Nash’s rule on this one is simple: “Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.”
FAQs

HardieBacker itself has a 30-plus year service life when properly installed and kept dry. What fails first in San Diego is almost always the waterproofing layer on top of it, not the board. Coastal moisture and salt air in neighborhoods like Point Loma and Ocean Beach accelerate sealant breakdown around shower pans and niches, so the board behind them gets wet sooner than it would inland. Call (619) 604-9624 if you want us to look at yours.
In most cases, no. Once water reaches the board, the affected section has to come out. Patching a soft board behind tile means pulling the tile anyway, and the seam where new board meets old board is exactly where water finds its way in next. A targeted repair can work if the damage is confined to a small low corner, but the honest answer for shower walls is usually replacement. Call (619) 604-9624 for an exact assessment.
A standard tub surround replacement with new HardieBacker runs four to seven working days including tile and cure time. A full bathroom tear-out with custom tile and pan generally runs two to three weeks. We give you a written arrival window before the crew shows up, so you know when the tile saw fires up and when the dust stops.
We stock half-inch and quarter-inch HardieBacker board, HardieBacker screws, and alkaline-resistant seam tape on every San Diego bathroom job. Waterproofing membrane, thinset, and grout are brought per project based on your tile and shower configuration. We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for vanity and countertop matches when a bathroom remodel extends into the rest of the space.
