Mighty Buildings Driveway & Pavers: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
We stock and install driveway and paver systems compatible with Mighty Buildings prefabricated structures across San Diego. Installed replacement work typically lands between $5,310 and $21,240 depending on the size of the drive, the paver material you’re matching, and whether we’re pulling up and re-setting an existing base or starting from bare ground. Most owners discover the problem the way you probably just did: a paver that’s cracked along one edge, a section that’s begun to sink near the garage apron, or drainage that’s pooling where it never used to after a heavy rain in Clairemont or La Mesa.
Which Mighty Buildings Models This Applies To
Mighty Buildings prefabricated units, including the accessory dwelling unit and studio models we’ve seen going in across San Diego backyards from Mira Mesa to Chula Vista, typically sit on a compacted base or slab. The driveway approach and any paver walkways around the unit are built as a separate field system, meaning the paving was almost certainly installed by a local contractor after the module was set. That’s actually useful for you: you’re not locked into a proprietary paver line. What matters is the sub-base specification (the compacted aggregate layer under the pavers) and the thickness of the paver itself. For driveways in San Diego County, you want a concrete or natural stone paver rated at 60mm to 80mm thickness. Anything thinner is a patio paver doing driveway work, and it will fail early. If you can see the side of a loose paver, measure it with a tape. If it’s under 2 3/8″ thick, that’s your smoking gun. We match OEM-original product where the manufacturer is identifiable (common out here are Belgard and Unilock lines), and we’ll tell you plainly when a quality equivalent is the smarter spend.

Signs Your Mighty Buildings Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Edge paver cracked along the driveway border. Almost always a sub-base that wasn’t compacted wide enough past the paver’s edge. The paver’s carrying wheel load with nothing solid under its outer third, and concrete pavers crack under point load. Fixing it means pulling the border course, building the base out, and re-setting on fresh bedding sand.
- Sinking or a low spot near the garage apron or unit entry. Water gets under the pavers, washes out the sand bedding, and leaves a void. In San Diego’s clay-heavy soils east of the 805, expansion and contraction from seasonal moisture makes this worse. Re-setting the pavers without fixing drainage means you’ll do the job twice.
- Water ponding on the surface after rain. Your paver field has lost its slope, or the sand joints have clogged and stopped draining. A properly set driveway should shed water to a swale or drain strip. If it’s pooling at the corner by a planter, you’ve got a grading issue, not a paver issue alone.
- Pavers rocking or shifting when you walk on them. Bedding sand has migrated. The interlock is gone. This is the earliest warning sign, and the cheapest time to call before the base is compromised.
- Weeds or ants pushing up through the joints. Joint sand has failed or was never properly filled. Weeds are a cosmetic signal, but ants mean tunneling under the pavers, which means the base has voids that will settle.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Diego, a full paver driveway replacement runs $8,260 to $21,240 installed. A partial repair, like re-setting a 100-square-foot sunken section or replacing a broken border run, usually lands between $1,500 and $4,000 depending on base work. Concrete driveway replacement over a Mighty Buildings site sits at $5,310 to $14,160. What drives the number is the base: if the original installer skipped the geotextile fabric or compacted an inch of gravel and called it good, we’re redoing that foundation, and that’s honest money well spent. You get a written price before anything is ordered, a defined arrival window, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise on the work, in writing. If a set of pavers shifts inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely pull up a single loose paver and look at what’s underneath it. You can sweep fresh polymeric sand into joints that are starting to open. Those are fair Saturday-morning jobs. Where we’d stop you is on anything that involves a wheelbarrow’s worth of digging or more. The failure you’re seeing is usually happening six inches below the surface. If you start pulling pavers without understanding whether the base is shot, you’ll have a yard of loose stone and a pile of pavers by Sunday afternoon, and a bigger bill than you’d have had on Friday. Call (619) 604-9624 and tell me what you’re seeing. I’ll tell you what it costs to make it right, and we’ll go from there.
FAQs

A correctly installed paver driveway in San Diego should last 25 to 30 years with basic joint-sand maintenance every five years or so. If yours is failing in under ten, the problem is almost always the sub-base, not the paver itself. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll tell you what’s happening under yours.
Yes, in most cases we can isolate the failed area, cut out the affected pavers, rebuild the base under that section, and re-set everything to match. You’ll see a slight color difference for the first season as new pavers weather, and we’ll tell you that up front before we schedule. Estimates are free.
Most San Diego driveway replacements run three to five working days from demo to final compaction, depending on access and whether we’re hand-cutting borders. Partial repairs are usually done in a day or two. You’ll get a written schedule with your written price.
We source the pavers through our trade accounts and have the material delivered to the site, which means you’re not hauling pallets or chasing down a discontinued color. If your original installer used a brand like Belgard or Unilock, we can usually match or get within a close color range. We’ll bring samples to the estimate.
