Dvele Driveway & Pavers: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

If your Dvele driveway or paver hardscape is cracking, settling, or draining poorly, the fix usually comes down to one of two things: the paver material itself or the base beneath it. We stock Dvele-compatible pavers and driveway materials at Penhallow Remodeling San Diego, and most driveway paver repairs in San Diego run between $826 and $4,130 depending on the square footage and what’s happening underneath. You’ll typically notice the problem first as a low spot that pools water after rain, a paver that rocks underfoot, or a crack that appears to be spreading along a joint line. That’s the signal to get it looked at before the base erodes and the repair doubles.

A quick note before we go further: Penhallow Remodeling San Diego is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Dvele, but we work on their homes regularly enough to know the driveway and paver specs they build with, and we carry compatible materials that match the original install.

Which Dvele Models This Applies To

Dvele homes in San Diego County – from the newer builds in Chula Vista to the hillside lots above Escondido – generally use one of three paver types for driveways: a 60mm or 80mm concrete interlocking paver from Belgard or Unilock, a permeable paver system for lots with stormwater requirements, or a cast-in-place concrete driveway with paver accents at the entry and walkway. The compatibility gotcha most owners run into is this: Dvele specs their paver thickness based on the slope and soil conditions of the specific lot, not the model line. Two identical Dvele floor plans on the same street can have different paver thicknesses because one sits on more expansive soil. So model number alone won’t tell you which paver you need. You want to measure the paver itself – 60mm is just under 2 3/8 inches thick, 80mm is just over 3 1/8 inches – and check the underside for a manufacturer stamp. Belgard stamps their pavers on the bottom face; Unilock stamps on the side face. That stamp combined with the color blend is what gets you an exact match.

For the OEM-versus-aftermarket decision: Dvele doesn’t manufacture pavers. They spec them from the brands above, which means the “OEM” paver is just the Belgard or Unilock product the builder ordered. There’s no Dvele-branded paver to hunt down. That’s good news – it means a quality aftermarket match from the same manufacturer is functionally identical to what’s already in your driveway, and it’s typically 15 to 20 percent less than what a builder supply house quotes when they know you’re matching a Dvele spec.

Signs Your Dvele Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Water pooling in the same spot after every rain. This means the base course under that section has settled or washed out. In San Diego’s clay-heavy soil, this usually starts at the driveway edge where water runs off and erodes the sand bedding.
  • A paver that rocks when you step on it. One rocking paver is usually just a bed of sand that’s thinned out underneath. A whole cluster of rocking pavers means the base itself is shifting, and that’s a different, more involved repair.
  • Cracks that follow a straight line across multiple pavers. Concrete pavers rarely crack on their own. A line crack across several pavers means the subgrade below is moving – often from tree roots, a leaking irrigation line, or vehicle traffic going where the base wasn’t built to carry it.
  • Sand washing out of the joints every time it rains. Joint sand is the glue that locks pavers together. If you see sand trails running down your driveway after a storm, the pavers are starting to work loose, and you’ll get chipping and misalignment next.
  • A sunken section near the garage apron or street edge. These are the two highest-load areas on any driveway. In San Diego specifically, we see apron settlement on homes built before the city tightened its driveway approach standards, and on newer Dvele lots where the builder graded the final approach in a hurry.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A single-story rear room addition with tall windows and a new patio

For a Dvele home in San Diego, a straightforward paver repair – pulling up a settled section, recompacting the base, adding fresh bedding sand, and resetting the same pavers – typically runs $826 to $2,125 depending on the square footage. If the pavers themselves are cracked or stained beyond reuse, you’re looking at $2,360 to $4,130 to source matching pavers, cut in the new pieces, and re-sand the joints. A full paver driveway replacement runs $8,260 to $21,240, which tracks with the citywide range for paver driveway installation. What drives the number up or down: how much base reconstruction is needed, whether we’re matching an existing color blend that’s still in production, and whether the repair area sits on a slope that requires re-compaction in lifts.

Every quote from us is a written number before work starts – not an estimate range, not a ballpark. It includes the parts, the labor, the base work, and cleanup. It also includes our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if the repair fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge, and the second visit is free – no service call, no re-inspection fee. If you want to know exactly what the number will be, call us for a free estimate and we’ll put it in writing.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself. Run a hose over the driveway and watch where the water goes – that tells you which direction the grade has moved. Try to lift a loose paver with a flat pry bar and look underneath: if the sand bed is thin but the base gravel is intact, that’s a smaller repair. If the base is muddy, soft, or full of voids, stop there. Rebuilding a driveway base requires compaction equipment, depth measurements, and edge restraint work that goes wrong fast for a homeowner – a driveway that looks fine for six weeks and then sinks again is almost always a DIY base repair. The same goes for any driveway section that carries vehicle load. If the fix involves power saws, compaction plates, or moving more than a couple square feet of pavers, call us at (619) 604-9624 and we’ll get you a written price. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.
