Sakrete Driveway & Pavers: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

Sakrete driveway and paver mixes are sold at nearly every home center in San Diego, from Escondido to Chula Vista, but the finished product is only as good as the person who mixed, poured, and finished it. Penhallow Remodeling San Diego stocks and installs Sakrete-compatible concrete and paver materials at written prices that run from $4,130 for a compact paver patio up to $21,240 for a full paver driveway, all priced before we open a single bag. Most San Diego homeowners call us when they spot cracking edges, sinking pavers near the curb, or surface spalling that appeared eight months after a pour.

If that’s you, the pages below explain how to identify what’s failing, what a proper fix costs in San Diego, and when it makes sense to have a crew handle it rather than fight a pallet of 60-pound bags yourself. We’re an independent contractor, not affiliated with Sakrete, and we don’t pretend otherwise. What we do is stand behind the work with a 365-day written promise. The call is (619) 604-9624.

Which Sakrete Models This Applies To

Sakrete’s product line breaks into three families that matter for driveway and paver work in San Diego: the Fast-Setting Concrete Mix (the gray and red bag you’ll see at Home Depot or Lowe’s in Linda Vista), the High-Strength Concrete Mix for structural slabs, and their Paver Set and Polymeric Sand lines for interlocking paver work. The right choice depends on your subgrade (the compacted soil below), slope, and how much traffic crosses the surface.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most San Diego homeowners miss: Sakrete’s Fast-Setting Mix is not a good match for driveways. It’s designed for fence posts and gate footings, not load-bearing slabs with vehicle weight. Pour a driveway in Mira Mesa with Fast-Setting Mix and you’ll see surface scaling within two seasons, especially where irrigation overspray hits it. We spec Sakrete High-Strength Concrete Mix (4000 PSI) for driveway pours and Sakrete Paver Set for paver beds, with polymeric sand in the joints. A quality aftermarket equivalent exists for most Sakrete products, but the formulation differences matter, and we’d rather put the right bag on the job than save $4 on a mix that cures weak.

Signs Your Sakrete Driveway & Pavers Are Failing

Concrete and pavers don’t usually fail all at once. The symptoms show themselves slowly, and most San Diego homeowners chalk them up to age until the problem gets expensive. Here’s what we see on service calls in Clairemont, North Park, and La Jolla:

  • Hairline cracks that widen every summer. In San Diego’s dry-wet winter cycles, water enters a ⅛-inch crack, then the rare freeze or heavy rain expands it. What starts as a cosmetic line becomes a structural break within two seasons.
  • Sunken pavers near the driveway edge. This is almost always subgrade failure. The compacted base underneath washed out or wasn’t tamped properly at install. Fixing it means pulling those pavers, recompacting the base, and resetting. Patching it with sand just buys you six months.
  • White, chalky surface or flaking. Called spalling, and San Diego sees a lot of it close to the coast. Salt air and de-icing chemicals (yes, some San Diegans de-ice in the east county) attack the paste in the concrete. A sealer can slow it, but flaking past ⅛ inch deep means resurfacing is the real fix.
  • Paver joints emptying out after rain. If your polymeric sand keeps washing down the driveway after every storm, the base is holding water underneath, and that water pushes the sand out. It’s a drainage issue, not a sand quality issue.
  • A dip or depression that holds water for hours after rain. When water ponds on new-ish concrete or pavers in the middle of the slab, the base settled, or the mix lost its crown. Standing water accelerates spalling and grows algae in coastal neighborhoods like Ocean Beach.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

An open living space after a whole-home remodel

Installed paver driveway work in San Diego runs $8,260 to $21,240, and a poured concrete driveway runs $5,310 to $14,160, both as complete replacement projects. Paver patios start around $4,130. Where your project lands depends on square footage, access (narrow side yards in Mission Hills cost more in labor than wide-open driveways in Rancho Bernardo), and what’s under the surface. A failing subgrade always costs more because we’re rebuilding the base, not just laying new material on top.

Every quote you get from us is a written number, not a range, given before any work begins. The price includes demolition and haul-away of the failed surface, subgrade prep and compaction, the Sakrete or Sakrete-equivalent materials, labor, and a 365-day Done Right Promise in writing. If the surface fails inside that window, we come back and make it right at no charge. No change orders, no re-quotes at the door, no surprise line items when the invoice arrives. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll put numbers on paper.

DIY or Call Us?

For driveway and paver work, the honest answer is that the dangerous part isn’t a spring or a gas line. It’s the weight. A single 60-pound bag of Sakrete is manageable. Twenty-five of them, mixed, carried, poured, floated, and edged in San Diego heat, will punish a back and knees that don’t do this every week. The real failure point in DIY driveway work is also the least visible: proper subgrade compaction. Skip it, or tamp it wrong, and your new driveway cracks inside a year. We’ve pulled up more than one homeowner-poured slab in San Diego that looked great for six months and then split from a bad base.

What you can safely do yourself: clean and seal an existing concrete surface that’s still sound, reset a single loose paver that hasn’t shifted its neighbors, or tighten a wobbly edging stone. Anything involving a full pour, base excavation, or more than three adjoining pavers is a job where the cost of a do-over exceeds the cost of doing it right the first time. Trevor Nash has spent nearly two decades running crews across San Diego, and he’s got a saying that applies here: “Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.”
