Oldcastle Kitchen Remodeling: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
If you have an Oldcastle kitchen component that’s worn, cracked, or failed outright, we stock Oldcastle-compatible replacement parts and install them across San Diego for a typical project cost of $16,520 – $53,100 depending on scope. Most owners discover the failure the hard way: a cabinet hinge shears off, a countertop seam opens up, or a backsplash tile lets water behind it after one too many coastal humidity cycles. You want the part matched, priced honestly, and installed without a second visit. That’s exactly what we do.
One thing up front: Penhallow Remodeling San Diego is an independent remodeling contractor. We’re not affiliated with Oldcastle, but we work with their kitchen product lines regularly, and we know which parts interchange and which ones don’t.
Which Oldcastle Models This Applies To

Oldcastle’s kitchen line covers a lot of ground, and the compatibility questions usually break down by product category rather than a single model number. Here’s what matters:
- Cabinet hardware and hinges: Oldcastle’s concealed hinges come in 35mm and 26mm cup depths. If you measure the bored hole in the back of your cabinet door, it’ll be one or the other. Get this wrong and the door won’t close flush. We carry both.
- Countertop edge profiles: Oldcastle’s standard quartz and solid surface tops ship with a pencil edge or a full bullnose. When a seam fails near the sink (the most common San Diego failure point, thanks to salt air and hard water), the replacement piece needs the same edge profile or the joint will never look right.
- Backsplash tile systems: Oldcastle’s modular backsplash panels stopped being manufactured in several colorways after 2018. If you have one of those, we can either source a close-match aftermarket equivalent or recommend a full backsplash replacement in the $945 – $2,950 range, which often makes more sense than chasing a discontinued die lot.
The OEM versus aftermarket question is real. Oldcastle’s OEM parts carry the original spec, but some are weeks out on order. We keep quality aftermarket equivalents on the truck for the high-failure items: hinge sets, drawer slides, and trim pieces. If your part is cosmetic and visible, we’ll always recommend OEM so the finish matches. If it’s functional and hidden, a good aftermarket part often outlasts the original and saves you 20 – 30%.

Signs Your Oldcastle Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- A cabinet door starts dropping or won’t stay closed. The hinge spring has lost tension, or the mounting plate has pulled loose from the face frame. In San Diego’s dry spells, cabinet frames shrink slightly, and screws that felt tight in May are loose by November.
- A countertop seam opens up near the sink or cooktop. This is the classic Oldcastle failure we see in coastal San Diego homes. Thermal cycling plus humidity swings stress the seam adhesive. Once the seam gaps, water gets in and the substrate starts swelling.
- Drawers stick, bind, or slide rough. The ball-bearing slides have accumulated dust and hard-water scale, or a wheel has cracked. Oldcastle’s side-mount slides are rated for 75 – 100 pounds, but years of overloaded utensil drawers take their toll.
- Backsplash tiles crack or grout crumbles behind the range. Heat from the cooktop works the grout loose first. Once grout fails, moisture gets behind the tile and you’re looking at a substrate repair, not just a re-grout.
- Cabinet boxes swell or delaminate near the sink base. A slow plumbing drip that nobody noticed has soaked the bottom panel. By the time you see bubbling laminate, the panel needs replacement, not drying out.

DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely handle a loose hinge screw or a sticking drawer glide with a screwdriver and some patience. Cleaning cabinet hardware and re-aligning a door are reasonable weekend tasks. But here’s the line: once a countertop seam has opened, or a cabinet box shows water damage, or a backsplash has lost grout behind the range, you’re into tools and materials that most homeowners don’t keep on hand. Get it wrong and you’re paying twice: once for the fix, and again for us to undo it. Trevor Nash has spent two decades running remodeling crews across San Diego, and he’s pulled permits from Mission Hills to Balboa Park. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.
If you’re not sure whether your Oldcastle part failure is simple or structural, call (619) 604-9624 and describe what you’re seeing. We’ll give you a straight answer.
FAQs

Countertops in San Diego kitchens generally last 15 – 25 years before a seam or surface failure, but coastal homes with salt air and hard water can see seams open earlier, often in the 10 – 15 year range. Cabinet hardware like hinges and slides typically fails in 8 – 12 years with daily use. We also stock parts for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone kitchens, so if you’re unsure what brand you have, we can identify it on site.
Sometimes. A loose hinge plate usually just needs longer screws and a toothpick or dowel filler. A rough drawer slide can often be cleaned and re-lubricated. But a cracked hinge, a delaminated cabinet panel, or an opened countertop seam is a replacement job. We’ll tell you which is which before quoting either path. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll walk through it.
Cabinet hardware replacement across a typical San Diego kitchen takes one day. Countertop seam repair is a half-day, plus curing time of 4 – 6 hours before normal use. A full backsplash replacement runs 2 – 3 days including grout cure. We give you a defined arrival window and hit it.
We stock the high-failure Oldcastle items on our trucks: 35mm concealed hinges, side-mount drawer slides, and standard trim pieces. Oddball or discontinued items may need a special order, and we’ll give you the lead time and price before we place it. Every part we install carries the same 365-Day Done Right Promise as our full remodels.
