Techo-Bloc Driveway & Pavers: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
If you have a Techo-Bloc paver driveway or patio in San Diego and a section is sinking, cracked, stained, or shifting, we stock Techo-Bloc-compatible pavers and handle matched replacements. Installed paver driveway work in San Diego typically runs $8,260 – $21,240 depending on square footage and base repair, while smaller paver patio repairs usually land between $4,130 and $12,980. Most owners discover the problem after winter rain, when a low spot turns into a puddle, or when a paver edge starts tilting and catching the toe of a shoe.
The frustrating part with Techo-Bloc specifically is that pavers fade over time. Sun does that. A brand-new paver dropped into a five-year-old driveway can look like a patch unless you know how to blend it. We do. And if the base underneath failed, swapping the paver is a temporary fix, not a repair. Trevor Nash has walked enough San Diego driveways to know the difference in about ten minutes.
One thing to be clear about: Penhallow Remodeling San Diego is an independent contractor. We are not affiliated with Techo-Bloc, and we don’t speak for the manufacturer. What we do is source their pavers, match what you have, and install repairs that stay flat. We also work with Belgard and Unilock products when a job calls for them.
Which Techo-Bloc Models This Applies To

Techo-Bloc makes a wide range of paver lines, and the compatibility questions usually come down to series, size, and color blend. The most common lines we see in San Diego driveways and patios are Blu 60, Industria, Aberdeen, and the larger-format Raffinato slabs. Within each series, there are multiple sizes sold as modular sets, so identifying exactly which paver you need means measuring the face dimensions, not just the thickness.
Here’s the gotcha: Techo-Bloc runs color batches. Two pavers from the same named color, like Shale Grey or Chestnut Brown, can differ noticeably if they were manufactured two years apart or at different plants. That’s why we ask for a photo and, ideally, a leftover paver from the original install. If you saved a few from the first job, that’s the best possible match source. If not, we bring samples to the site and compare in daylight before ordering anything.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for Techo-Bloc pavers, there is no true aftermarket equivalent worth installing. Some local landscape yards sell similar-looking pavers from other brands, but the face texture and chamfer profile rarely match, and the joint lines end up looking wrong. We use genuine Techo-Bloc product for Techo-Bloc repairs. The only time we recommend an alternative brand is when the original line has been discontinued and even then, we tell you before we quote.

Signs Your Techo-Bloc Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Sunken or low spots that hold water after rain. This almost always means the base layer has washed out or settled, not that the paver itself is defective. San Diego’s clay-heavy soil in areas like Clairemont and Mission Valley expands and contracts with moisture, which accelerates settling when the base wasn’t compacted properly the first time.
- Pavers rocking or shifting underfoot. A loose paver means the bedding sand below has migrated out through the joints, usually because the edge restraint has failed. The fix is resetting the paver on fresh sand and reinstalling the edge, not just tapping it back down.
- Widening gaps between pavers. Over several seasons, especially on driveways with vehicle traffic, the interlock system can spread if the perimeter isn’t properly contained. You’ll see the gaps first near the driveway edge or along a curb.
- White efflorescence or chalky residue on the surface. This is mineral salts leaching through the paver. It’s cosmetic and cleanable, but recurring efflorescence can mean water is getting under the pavers more than it should, which points back to drainage.
- Edge pavers dropping away from the main field. When the sand base erodes along a walkway or patio border, the whole edge row starts to tilt outward. This is the earliest warning sign, and it’s cheaper to fix at this stage than after the failure spreads inward.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Diego, a paver repair that involves pulling a failed section, re-compacting the base, and relaying the pavers typically runs $15 – $35 per square foot depending on access and how deep the base repair needs to go. A full paver driveway installation runs $8,260 – $21,240, and a paver patio runs $4,130 – $12,980. The main cost drivers are square footage, the condition of the subgrade underneath, and whether we’re matching existing Techo-Bloc pavers or starting fresh.
Every quote from Penhallow Remodeling San Diego includes the pavers, base material, labor, haul-away of any failed product, and a written price before we start. No change orders on the day of work unless you ask us to expand the scope. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers any paver repair we install: if it settles, shifts, or fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing, on every job.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do some things on your own. Sweep the joints, pull weeds, hose down the surface, and take clear photos of the problem area. Those photos help whether you call us or someone else. What you shouldn’t do is start prying up pavers yourself, especially in a driveway. Lifting a paver breaks the interlock bond, and homeowners regularly find that the loose paver was the only thing holding its neighbors in place. Plus, once you disturb the base, you’ve turned a repair into a reset.
If you’ve got a sunken section, a spreading edge, or pavers that feel like they’re floating, call us at (619) 604-9624. We’ll look at what you have, tell you what it costs, and you can decide from there. That’s how we work.
FAQs

With a properly installed base, Techo-Bloc concrete pavers typically last 25 – 40 years in San Diego’s climate. The pavers themselves hold up well to UV and coastal air, but the base layer underneath is what actually determines lifespan, and poor drainage or clay soil movement can shorten that significantly. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll tell you honestly whether your base is the problem or the pavers are fine.
A chipped corner or hairline crack can sometimes be stabilized with paver adhesive, but a paver that has cracked through is best replaced outright since concrete pavers can’t be structurally repaired like stone. Replacement also lets us match the fit with the surrounding field, which gives a cleaner result than a repair patch. We’ll quote both options when we see the paver.
A small section repair, pulling and resetting a few pavers, usually takes one day. A larger driveway repair with base work and re-compaction can take two to three days depending on access and weather. We’ll give you a defined arrival window and a written timeline before any work starts.
We source Techo-Bloc pavers directly and bring the product with us on the repair day. You don’t need to order anything yourself, and we’ll match color and size on-site before finalizing the quote. If you have extra pavers left from the original installation, let us know, because those are the best match source we can use.
