ActiveYards Driveway & Pavers: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
We stock and install ActiveYards-compatible driveway and paver components across San Diego, with most complete paver driveway installations running $8,260 – $21,240 and simpler paver patio projects at $4,130 – $12,980. If you’ve got a cracked paver, a sinking section, or edge restraints that have popped loose, we can usually match the replacement part and have a written price in your hand the same visit. Most owners discover the failure after winter rain or a few summers of San Diego sun, when a paver shifts or a joint starts crumbling and suddenly the driveway doesn’t look or drain the way it used to.
Which ActiveYards Models This Applies To

ActiveYards builds aluminum fencing and railing systems, but their driveway and paver lines come through their outdoor living catalog, which includes paver grids, edge restraints, and the polyethylene paver base panels that sit under the surface material. If you’re holding a part with an ActiveYards label, check the underside or edge for a molded series number: the paver grids are typically 2-foot by 2-foot panels with interlocking tabs, and the edge restraints run roughly 8 feet per section with pre-drilled stake holes. The key compatibility gotcha we see in San Diego: ActiveYards paver grid panels are designed to interlock with their own matching edging system, so an off-brand edging strip will leave a 1/8-inch gap that lets sand migrate and pavers drift. OEM ActiveYards parts are the safe default, but we also carry high-density polyethylene aftermarket grid panels that match the panel thickness and tab dimensions, which matters when you’re patching a section rather than replacing the whole driveway. Penhallow Remodeling San Diego is an independent service provider and not affiliated with ActiveYards, so we can be straight with you about which parts justify the OEM price and which ones don’t.
If the part label is worn off, measure the panel. ActiveYards grids are manufactured in both 24-inch and 36-inch widths depending on the installation year, and a 36-inch panel from a newer system will not seat into an older 24-inch grid layout without cutting, which weakens the interlock. Bring us a photo and a measurement, or have us out to look, and we’ll tell you exactly which series you have before anyone orders a single part.

Signs Your ActiveYards Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Pavers shifting or spreading at the edges: The edge restraint has lost its stake grip in the soil, usually from San Diego’s expanding and contracting clay soils during wet winters and dry summers. Once the edge moves, the whole field starts to drift outward.
- Low spots forming in traffic areas: The base under the pavers, often a layer of crushed rock and sand, has washed away or compacted unevenly. The paver itself is fine; what’s underneath it isn’t holding up anymore.
- Sand washing out of the joints after every rain: This means the joint sand isn’t locking, either because the pavers are shifting slightly or the original install used a non-polymeric sand that never hardened. Left alone, the pavers start rubbing against each other and chipping edges.
- Cracked or chipped pavers concentrated in one area: A single cracked paver is usually the result of a point load or a dropped edge. Multiple cracked pavers in the same stretch points to a base problem underneath, and replacing just the pavers won’t stop the pattern.
- A paver grid panel that’s visible at the surface or buckling: The grid is meant to sit below the pavers and lock them together. When sun and soil movement push it up, you’ll see plastic edges at the surface, and the paver joints above it will be uneven and growing wider.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Paver driveway installation in San Diego typically runs $8,260 – $21,240 depending on square footage, paver type, and how much of the base needs to be rebuilt. Paver patios run $4,130 – $12,980, and a straight paver replacement or small repair section usually lands at the lower end of the patio range or below, depending on how many pavers are actually broken and whether the base is sound. What drives the number up: paver style and thickness, the square footage of grid panels that need replacing, how much of the crushed rock base needs to be compacted or removed, and San Diego access conditions like narrow side yards or retaining walls that force wheelbarrow work instead of machine access.
Every price we give is written and fixed before any work starts. That number includes the parts, the base work if required, the labor, and cleanup, and the price on day one is the price on the invoice. We also write our 365-Day Done Right Promise into the job: if the pavers shift, crack, or the edging fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. No service call fee, no re-inspection fee. That promise is in writing on every paver and driveway job we take in San Diego.

Replacing a single cracked paver that’s sitting in an otherwise sound field is something a careful homeowner can do with a pry bar, a bag of paver sand, and a rubber mallet. What we tell San Diego owners not to do themselves is pull up grid panels or edge restraints and rebuild the base. Once the base is disturbed, you’re into soil compaction, drainage slope, and paver re-leveling, and a base that’s compacted even 10% too loose will sink again within a season or two. You’ll also want to be careful working around any paver sections that sit near buried irrigation lines or low-voltage lighting; those are easy to nick with a shovel. If you’re not sure whether your failure is surface-level or base-level, call us at (619) 604-9624 and we’ll look before you spend a weekend guessing. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.
FAQs

Paver surface lifespan in San Diego runs 25 to 40 years for the paver itself, but the grid panels and edge restraints below them realistically last 15 to 20 years in our clay soils and UV exposure before the plastic starts to degrade or the interlock loosens. If the base was installed correctly, you’ll likely replace grid sections once during the life of the driveway. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll assess whether your failure is surface or base before you spend anything.
If the crack is hairline and the paver is still locked into the field, it can often be left alone or patched with a polymeric joint sand and left in service. If the paver has broken into pieces or shifted out of plane, replacement is the only repair that holds. We carry matching pavers for most San Diego jobs and can tell you on a quick visit whether your paver can wait. Estimates are free.
A single paver swap takes under an hour once we’re on site. A full grid panel replacement under a driveway section runs one to two days depending on square footage, and a complete paver driveway replacement in San Diego generally runs three to five days including base work and compaction. We’ll give you a written schedule along with the written price so you know exactly what the week looks like. Call (619) 604-9624 to set a walkthrough.
We stock ActiveYards grid panels, edge restraints, and matching pavers on the truck for the most common San Diego installations, and for less common series we can have parts in hand within a few business days. If you send us a photo of the label or a measurement of the panel, we can tell you before the first visit whether we’ll have it on the truck that day. Call (619) 604-9624 and ask for Trevor; we’ll match the part so you’re not stuck guessing.
