Ameristar Windows & Doors: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
We carry Ameristar-compatible window and door parts across San Diego, and in most cases a failed component can be matched and installed the same visit. Full window replacement for a standard Ameristar single-hung in San Diego runs roughly $5,310 to $17,700 installed, depending on size, glass package, and frame condition. A hardware or weatherstripping fix is far less, usually a few hundred dollars, and that’s what we see most often when an Ameristar unit starts acting up: the lock mechanism gives out, the balance stops holding, or the door sweep drags.
Most San Diego homeowners figure out something’s wrong when the window won’t stay open, or the patio door needs a hip-check to close. By then the part has usually worn past adjustment, and no amount of silicone spray is bringing it back.
Which Ameristar Models This Applies To

Ameristar has produced several series over the years, including builder-grade aluminum and vinyl lines that show up all over San Diego tract homes from the late 1990s forward. The parts that fail most often sit in the Single Hung, Sliding Window, and Sliding Patio Door lines. Identifying your exact model matters more than you’d think. The lock and latch geometry changed subtly between generations, and a balance that fits a 2004 Ameristar Single Hung will not necessarily mate to a 2012 unit, even if the glass dimensions are identical.
Look for a small label on the top or bottom rail of the sash, or along the interior frame edge. If the label’s gone, take two measurements: the visible glass width and height to the nearest eighth inch, and the depth of the frame pocket. That third number is the one most people skip, and it’s the one that determines whether an aftermarket balance or latch will seat properly. We source OEM Ameristar parts where the series is still supported, and use a handful of domestic aftermarket manufacturers we’ve tested for the older discontinued runs. The aftermarket parts we carry are built to the same dimensional spec, and we back them with the same guarantee we put on every job.

Signs Your Ameristar Windows & Doors Is Failing
- The sash drops when you let go. Your block-and-tackle or spiral balance has lost tension. Older Ameristar units used a plastic carrier that cracks after years of San Diego sun heating the channel. It’s not a cleaning issue; the balance needs replacing.
- The window locks but the lock tab wobbles. The die-cast lock housing has stripped at the screw posts, usually because the window was forced open against the lock at some point. A new lock assembly is the only real fix.
- The patio door rolls rough and leaves metal shavings on the track. The steel roller bearings in your Ameristar door have worn through. San Diego’s dry climate and hard water accelerate this, especially on west-facing doors within a few miles of the coast.
- You hear wind at the meeting rail even when the sash sits closed. The interlock weatherstrip has compressed flat. On Ameristar sliders this is a dedicated profile, not a generic peel-and-stick strip, and it has to match the original extrusion shape.
- The cranks or handles turn but nothing moves. The operator gear inside an Ameristar casement window has stripped. These were a smaller production run, but we still see them in custom homes around Scripps Ranch and Rancho Peñasquitos from the early 2000s.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For parts-and-labor repairs, expect $290 to $480 for a balance or lock replacement on a typical Ameristar window in San Diego, including the service call and the part. A patio door roller swap on a two-panel slider runs $340 to $560. Full window replacement lands in that $5,310 to $17,700 range, driven mostly by glass package, frame option, and how much interior trim has to be rebuilt.
Every quote we give in San Diego is a written number before we start, and the number on day one is the number on the invoice. The part itself is line-itemed. The labor is line-itemed. If the repair fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge under our 365-Day Done Right Promise, and that includes a second visit at no cost if the replacement part was defective out of the box.
DIY or Call Us?
A homeowner can safely clean the track, check for loose screws, and note exactly where the failure is happening. What you don’t want to do is pull a window balance out of a loaded channel or try to re-tension a spiral balance with a homemade tool. Those springs and cables hold real tension, and when they release, they release fast. We’ve had more than one San Diego homeowner show us the scar from a screwdriver that went through a hand during a DIY balance job.
If the failure involves a balance, a spring, or a patio door that has jumped its track, call us. A background-checked, uniformed Penhallow technician will come out, carry the right part, and do the swap without drama. You’ll know the price before we touch anything. (619) 604-9624.
FAQs

Ameristar aluminum and vinyl units in San Diego’s climate typically hold up for 20 to 25 years before the hardware and weatherstripping cycle out, though the glass itself can last far longer. Coastal exposure shortens that for metal components, especially in neighborhoods like Point Loma and Ocean Beach where salt air works on the spring steel. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll tell you honestly whether your unit is worth repairing or replacing.
No, not safely or durably. Balances, locks, rollers, and weatherseals are wear items, and once they’ve failed, a patch job means you’ll be calling again in a few months. The exception is a door that’s only out of adjustment, which we can sometimes realign without new parts. Estimates are free, and we’ll only sell you what the window actually needs.
A single balance or lock replacement takes under an hour once our technician is on site in San Diego. A patio door roller swap runs 60 to 90 minutes. Full window replacement typically runs one day for a standard opening, depending on trim and stucco work around the frame. We’ll give you a window when we schedule, and a real person answers the phone 24/7 if you need to reach us.
We keep the most common Ameristar balances, locks, rollers, and weatherstripping profiles on our service vehicles for San Diego jobs. If your model takes a less common part, we’ll have it sourced and installed within a few business days. We’ll tell you which situation you’re in before you commit to anything.
No. Penhallow Remodeling San Diego is an independent service and remodeling company. We’re not an Ameristar dealer, and we don’t claim to be. What we do is carry and install compatible parts for Ameristar windows and doors, and we stand behind the work with a written guarantee, the same way we do for the KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone products we build with.
Yes. Every Ameristar repair or replacement gets a written price before any work begins, and the written number is what you pay. Trevor Nash has run it that way since he started swinging a framing hammer back in trade school at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, and we’ve never had a reason to change. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.
