Therma-Tru Fence Installation: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

Therma-Tru fence installation across San Diego typically runs $4,130 to $10,620 for a full perimeter job, with most post-and-panel replacements landing close to the middle of that range depending on gate hardware, post-setting depth, and whether we’re matching existing sections. We carry Therma-Tru-compatible fence panels, posts, and gate systems on our trucks across San Diego County, and most single-section repairs can be quoted and scheduled within the same week. Homeowners usually call us the morning they notice a gate dragging against the concrete, a post leaning after winter rain, or a fence panel that buzzes in the wind where it used to sit quiet.

Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To

Therma-Tru is best known for doors, but their fence and gate lines share the same design language: fiberglass-reinforced rails, composite pickets, and powder-coated aluminum post wraps that hold up in San Diego’s coastal salt air and inland heat. The compatibility gotcha we see most often is post size. Older Therma-Tru fence runs in San Diego were commonly set with 4×4 posts at the hinge and latch sides, while newer sections and gate assemblies expect 5×5 posts with reinforced hinge blocks. Measure the post face before you order anything. If it reads 3-1/2 inches across, that is a 4×4. If it reads 4-1/2, that is a 5×5. Mixing these at the gate will give you a hinge that binds within six months, no matter how carefully it is shimmed.

The second check is the rail-to-post bracket. Therma-Tru’s newer bracket line has a tabbed locking ear that seats into a milled slot on the post wrap. The older line used a face-mounted bracket with two lag screws and no tab. You can usually read the bracket stamp through the paint on the inside face of the post. If it is stamped with a small TT logo and a four-digit number, it is an OEM part and we can match it. If there is no stamp, it is an aftermarket bracket and we can still match it. Aftermarket post caps and picket clips are generally fine for San Diego conditions. Aftermarket gate hinges and pivot pins, less so, because those take the brunt of the weight and wind load on a west-facing run.

Penhallow Remodeling San Diego is an independent contractor and not affiliated with Therma-Tru. We install their products and we know their tolerances, but the warranty on the work itself comes from us, in writing, before we cut anything.

Signs Your Therma-Tru Fence Installation Is Failing

  • The gate drags or scrapes at the latch edge. This is almost never the gate. It is the post. A post that has shifted even a quarter-inch out of plumb at the hinge side moves the latch edge a full inch at the far end. When we lift the gate off and check the post, we usually find either a rusted hinge block or a post base that has been sitting in water long enough to soften the footing.
  • The pickets wobble or rattle against the rails. Therma-Tru pickets use a snap-in clip at the top rail and a seat channel at the bottom. The clips fatigue after enough thermal cycling, and San Diego’s inland valleys swing 30 degrees between night and noon. Once two or three clips fail, the picket rattles. Once a dozen fail, the panel starts to rack.
  • A post leans after rain, and then straightens back up. That is the soil expanding and contracting around the footing. If the footing was poured too shallow, the whole post shifts as the ground moves. In Chula Vista and Spring Valley, where the soil is heavier clay, we see this on fences set less than 24 inches deep. Code in most of San Diego County wants fence posts below the frost line, but the real driver is how much clay is under the footing.
  • The bottom rail is soft or splintered at the post connection. Composite rails wick moisture at the bracket holes if they were not sealed during the original install. Once the fibers swell around a lag screw, the connection is compromised. We can cut the rail back, sleeve the end, and re-bracket it, but only if the panel above is still straight.
  • The latch works, but the gate bounces when it closes. The pivot bearing in the hinge has flattened out. Therma-Tru’s self-closing hinges have a nylon bearing that wears against the pin. When that bearing goes, the gate drops a half-inch and bounces when it seats. The part itself is about $14. The labor to strip the hinge, replace the bearing, and re-hang the gate is the line item that surprises people.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A built-in window seat in a bay window

For San Diego, full Therma-Tru fence installation runs $4,130 to $10,620. That range covers a standard 6-foot fence line with one or two gates, set on new concrete footings where needed, with Therma-Tru-compatible posts, rails, and pickets. The spread is driven by three things: how many linear feet you have, whether we are reusing existing footings or pouring new ones, and what the gate hardware costs. A single gate with self-closing hinges and a locking latch adds $350 to $900. A double drive gate with a welded steel frame adds $1,100 to $2,400.

Partial repairs come in under that range. A snapped post replaced with a new footing is usually $380 to $650. A panel re-hung with new brackets is $220 to $450. A full gate rebuild with new posts, hinges, and latch is $700 to $1,300. We quote the part and the labor as separate line items so you can see both numbers. Nothing is bundled into a “miscellaneous” charge. Every job, repair or full install, includes our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the fence fails inside a year due to our workmanship, we come back and fix it at no charge. That is not a verbal promise. It is on the invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things without opening the tool chest. Look at the post bases after a rain. Look for gaps between the post and the concrete. Check that the gate still lines up with the latch. Measure the post faces so you know whether it is 4×4 or 5×5. That helps us quote accurately over the phone.

What is not a DIY project is resetting a post. Once you dig out a footing, you are exposing whatever the original installer left down there, and in San Diego that is often a shallow concrete plug with no gravel base under it. Digging it out and pouring a proper footing means getting below the clay layer, setting the post plumb in two directions, and letting the concrete cure before re-hanging the weight of the gate. Do it wrong and the gate sags again in eight months. We have fixed enough of those to know the pattern. If you want to check the post yourself, we will walk you through it on the phone. If the post needs to come out, call us at (619) 604-9624. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.
