Mr-Glass Windows & Doors: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

We carry and install Mr-Glass-compatible windows and doors throughout San Diego, with most replacement parts running $470 – $2,125 installed depending on the component and model line. Most homeowners call us after noticing a window that won’t stay open, a door that drags against the frame, or glass that’s fogged between the panes. If you’ve got a Mr-Glass product that’s failed or failing, here’s the straight answer on what it costs, what we stock, and whether you should touch it yourself.

Penhallow Remodeling San Diego is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Mr-Glass. We work on their products because San Diego homeowners have a lot of them, and because the parts are straightforward to source when you know what to look for.

Which Mr-Glass Models This Applies To

Mr-Glass has produced several window and door lines over the years, and the compatibility challenge is real. The most common lines we service in San Diego are their single-hung and horizontal slider windows from the mid-2000s onward, plus their French and sliding patio doors. The easiest way to identify what you have is the small foil label on the frame edge, usually on the top or side rail. That label gives you the series number and sometimes the glass spec, which matters because Mr-Glass used different balance systems across their product generations.

Here’s the gotcha most owners don’t know: Mr-Glass changed their window balance design around 2010. Older units use a block-and-tackle balance, while newer ones use a constant-force coil system. The parts don’t interchange. If you order a replacement balance online based on the window width alone, you’ve got a good chance of getting the wrong part. We match by series, sash weight, and the visible hardware style before ordering anything. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question, we’ve had good results with OEM Mr-Glass parts when they’re available, but for balances and rollers we often use manufactured equivalents that meet or beat the original spec, because they’re easier to source quickly and the warranty is comparable.

Signs Your Mr-Glass Windows & Doors Is Failing

  • The window drops shut or won’t stay up. The balance system has lost tension. On Mr-Glass windows, this usually means the coil spring inside the balance cartridge has broken or slipped, not that the whole window needs replacing.
  • You have to shoulder the door to get it to close. The rollers on a patio door or the hinges on a French door have worn unevenly. In San Diego’s dry climate, the nylon wheels on Mr-Glass patio doors tend to crack rather than gum up, which changes how the door sits in the track.
  • Condensation between the panes that won’t wipe off. The seal on the insulated glass unit has failed. Once that seal goes, the argon or krypton fill escapes and you’re looking at a foggy window that won’t clear. Mr-Glass glass packs are replaceable without swapping the entire frame.
  • Drafts around the frame on calm days. Weatherstripping has compressed or the sash has settled out of square. It’s often a $20 part and an hour of labor, not a full window replacement.
  • The lock no longer lines up with the strike plate. This usually means the sash or door panel has shifted, either from worn rollers or from the frame settling. It’s also the point where a window becomes a security issue, because a window that won’t lock is a window that won’t do its job.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled primary suite with built-in wardrobes and a window seat

For Mr-Glass windows and doors in San Diego, most part replacements land between $470 and $2,125 installed. That range covers everything from a single balance cartridge or roller swap on the low end, up to a full insulated glass unit replacement on the high end. A fogged-glass replacement on a standard Mr-Glass slider typically runs $800 – $1,500 depending on the glass size and whether it’s dual or triple pane.

What drives the number: part cost, accessibility (second-story windows require ladder work), and whether the frame needs adjustment after the part goes in. We give you a written price before any work starts, and that number doesn’t change. Every Mr-Glass replacement we do includes the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the part fails or the window still isn’t operating right within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. No service call fee, no re-inspection fee, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

Some things are safe to check on your own. You can look for the model label on the frame edge. You can watch how the window behaves when you open it halfway and let go. You can clean the tracks on a sliding door and see if that changes how it rolls. Those are all reasonable first steps.

What we don’t recommend: pulling the sash out of a Mr-Glass single-hung to access the balances. Those balance cartridges are under spring tension, and when they let go they let go fast. Same story with anything involving the glass itself. An insulated glass unit is heavy, and a wrong move with a razor scraper or the wrong shim can crack the seal on a $600 replacement pack before it’s even installed. If the part involves springs, sealed glass, or anything that requires the window to come out of the frame, call us at (619) 604-9624. The estimate is free, and you’ll get a straight answer on whether it’s a quick fix or a bigger job.
