CGI Windows & Doors: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

We stock and install CGI-compatible windows and doors across San Diego, with most replacement parts and full units running $5,310 – $17,700 installed depending on size, series, and what failed. Most homeowners call us after a storm season or a failed latch, not because the window itself wore out but because one component stopped doing its job.

You usually notice it three ways: a crank that spins without moving the sash, a sliding door that suddenly drags on its track, or a latch that won’t catch like it used to. Sometimes it’s quieter, a draft along the frame or condensation you never saw before. The good news: a specific part is the usual culprit, and that part can usually be matched to your CGI model without replacing the whole window.

Which CGI Models This Applies To

A dining nook with a built-in banquette

CGI builds three window and door families you’ll find in San Diego homes: the Estate Collection, the Estate Entrances line of doors, and the Sentinel sliding glass door series. Most of the coastal and bayside homes we work on in La Jolla, Point Loma, and Coronado have Estate Series windows, while Mission Hills and Kensington ranch homes often carry the older Estate single-hung and casement lines.

Here is the compatibility gotcha most owners don’t know: CGI changed hinge geometry and keeper dimensions between the original Estate line and the later Estate Impact series. The parts look alike from six feet away, but the screw centers are off by a few millimeters. If you’re ordering a replacement yourself or buying from a secondhand listing, check the sticker on the inside frame edge for the four-digit product code and the glass type. The letter suffix, not the general model name, is what determines part fit.

On OEM versus aftermarket: CGI factory parts run about 30 – 45% more than quality aftermarket equivalents, and for structural components like impact-rated hinges and multipoint lock bars, we recommend OEM. For rollers, weatherstripping, and crank mechanisms, a well-sourced aftermarket part often matches factory performance at a better price. We spell out the difference on every written estimate and let you choose.

Penhallow Remodeling San Diego is an independent service provider, not affiliated with CGI. We work on CGI products because they’re common in San Diego, and because we know how the parts age in this specific coastal climate.

Signs Your CGI Windows & Doors Is Failing

  • The crank spins but the sash barely moves. The gear mechanism inside the crank housing has stripped, usually after years of salt air working into the operator. This is the single most common failure we see in San Diego seaward of the I-5.
  • The sliding door rolls about halfway, then sticks or grinds. One roller has collapsed or flattened. Salt and fine coastal dust pile up inside the roller channel, scoring the wheel until it won’t turn. A sharp pop when the door settles is a dead giveaway.
  • The latch catches but won’t lock with the key or thumb turn. The multipoint lock bar has drifted out of alignment with the keeper on the frame. It binds because the door slab settles, or because the strike plate slots were cut too close at factory spec.
  • You feel air moving around the sash even when it’s closed. Compression weatherstripping has gone flat and lost its memory. That’s not a leak in the glass, it’s the gasket, and in San Diego’s dry heat it goes brittle after seven to ten years on west-facing walls.
  • The glass is clear but there’s moisture between the panes. The sealed unit has lost its edge seal. With CGI’s impact laminated glass, that means humidity has made it inside the interlayer gap. The window can still hold against wind, but the insulation value is dropping, and the fog never goes away on its own.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A home office with a built-in desk and shelves

San Diego pricing for CGI-compatible parts and service breaks down into three tiers. A single part like a crank operator, roller set, or lock keeper typically runs $470 – $2,125 installed including the service call and labor. A full sash replacement or reseal job lands between $2,360 and $5,310 depending on glass size and whether it’s laminated impact. A complete window or sliding door replacement runs $5,310 – $17,700, with the spread driven by frame material, glass type, and how much trim and stucco work the opening needs.

Every estimate includes the part, the labor, the sealant and fasteners, and the cleanup in one written number. No add-ons at the door. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if the repair fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. No service call fee, no re-inspection fee, no fine print.

DIY or Call Us?

A few things are worth checking yourself before you call: a sliding door track can be cleaned with a vacuum and a soft brush, and a latch misalignment can sometimes be fixed by adjusting the two screws on the keeper. If the door lifts or shifts when you work the handle, stop there. The tension-loaded roller assemblies and the spring-balanced sash carriers can snap back hard enough to injure a hand.

Anything involving the crank operator replacement, multipoint lock removal, or pulling a window sash means dealing with counterbalances and point-loaded frames. We carry the right tools and the common CGI hardware on the truck, and honestly, most of these jobs take a technician 45 to 90 minutes. If you’ve checked what you can check and it’s still not acting right, call us at (619) 604-9624. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.
