CGI Kitchen Remodeling: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
If you’ve got a kitchen with CGI cabinetry or a CGI-designed layout and something’s failed, here’s what you need to know: we install and rebuild CGI-compatible kitchens across San Diego, and a full remodel typically runs $16,520 – $53,100 depending on cabinet line, countertop material, and how far the damage goes. Most owners discover a problem the way you just did: a drawer face that won’t sit flush anymore, a hinge that’s pulled loose from the frame, or a corner cabinet that’s started to sag. The good news is that CGI cabinetry is built on a modular frame system, which means we can usually replace or rebuild the failed section without tearing out the whole kitchen.
We’re an independent San Diego remodeling contractor, not affiliated with CGI. But we work with their cabinetry often enough to know exactly what fails first and what it takes to fix it properly.
Which CGI Models This Applies To

CGI cabinetry shows up in a lot of San Diego homes built or remodeled between roughly 1995 and 2015, most commonly in tract developments in Clairemont, Tierrasanta, Rancho Peñasquitos, and parts of Chula Vista. The brand’s identifying mark is usually a small foil label inside the sink base cabinet or on the back of a drawer box, printed with a series code that starts with “CGI” followed by four digits. That code matters more than you’d think: CGI changed their hinge boring pattern (the drill holes on the back of the door) twice during that production window, and a door from one era won’t hang correctly on a cabinet from another.
When we walk a job, we check that series code before ordering anything. We also measure the door overlay (the amount the door covers the cabinet face frame) because CGI produced both full-overlay and half-overlay lines, and mixing the two looks fine from across the room but wrong up close. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: CGI’s factory replacement doors are still available for many series, but lead times run 4 – 6 weeks. Quality aftermarket maple or birch doors from a San Diego cabinet shop can be built in half that time and finished to match, which is often the better route on a kitchen you’re trying to get back into service.

Signs Your CGI Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Drawer faces separating from the drawer box. CGI used a glued-and-stapled joint on many drawer fronts, and once the glue dries out in San Diego’s low humidity, the staples start working loose. You’ll see a hairline gap at the top edge first.
- Hinges pulling out of the door or frame. The particleboard door cores on CGI’s mid-tier lines don’t hold a hinge screw forever, especially on high-use doors like the under-sink cabinet. If you’ve tightened the screw once and it’s loose again, the bore is wallowed out.
- Sagging corner or sink base cabinet. Water exposure is the usual culprit. CGI’s earlier lines used a vinyl-wrapped MDF toe kick that wicks moisture from floor mopping and swells over time, dropping the cabinet face.
- Delaminating thermofoil doors. The white and cream thermofoil doors from CGI’s 2000s production are prone to peeling at the edges, particularly near the dishwasher or any heat source. Once water vapor gets behind the foil, it separates fast.
- Soft-close hardware that stopped being soft. The Blum or Grass runners CGI used on higher-end lines wear out and lose their damping fluid. You’ll hear the drawer hit the back of the cabinet with a thunk instead of a whisper.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For CGI-specific kitchen work in San Diego, here’s what we quote:
- Full CGI kitchen remodel: $16,520 – $53,100
- Cabinet installation (new or replacement line): $4,720 – $15,340
- Countertop installation: $2,360 – $7,670
- Kitchen island installation: $3,540 – $11,800
What moves the number: whether we’re rebuilding on the existing CGI cabinet boxes or pulling and replacing entire runs, which countertop material you choose (a Cambria or Silestone slab runs more than laminate, and carries its own warranty alongside ours), and whether the failure damaged the cabinet boxes themselves or just the doors and hardware. Every quote includes demolition, haul-away, installation, and the written guarantee. We hand you a written price before any work starts, and that number is the number on the invoice. If something we installed fails inside 365 days, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing, on every job.
DIY or Call Us?
Some things you can safely check yourself: confirm the series code label inside the sink cabinet, measure the door width and height, and take photos of the hinge side so we can see the boring pattern. That information saves a trip. But pulling cabinets apart is where DIY goes sideways fast. A cabinet run that’s been sagging has been transferring weight onto fasteners that weren’t designed for it, and when you remove the wrong screw first, the whole box can drop. If you’ve got a sink base cabinet involved, you’re also working around water supply lines and the garbage disposal wiring. None of that is worth a trip to urgent care.
If the drawer still opens and closes, you’ve got time. If it’s coming apart in your hand, call us at (619) 604-9624 and we’ll take a look.
FAQs

CGI cabinets in San Diego typically last 15 – 25 years depending on the line, the humidity in the house, and how much water they’ve seen. The boxes hold up longer than the doors and hardware, which is why we often rebuild on existing boxes rather than tear everything out. Call (619) 604-9624 if you want to know what yours are worth saving.
Yes, in most cases a failing CGI cabinet can be repaired by rebuilding the joint with wood glue and mechanical fasteners, replacing the hinge with a larger-bore model, or re-wrapping a damaged panel. If the box itself is water-damaged, replacement is usually cheaper than repair. We’ll tell you which one you’re looking at, and the estimate is free.
A typical CGI kitchen remodel in San Diego takes 3 – 6 weeks from permit to final walkthrough, depending on whether we’re keeping the existing layout or moving plumbing and electrical. Cabinet door and drawer replacements alone can often be done in under a week. We’ll give you a written schedule before work starts.
We don’t stock factory CGI doors on the shelf, because the series codes and overlays vary too much to keep inventory that fits every home. We do stock common hinges, slides, soft-close dampers, and replacement drawer boxes in our San Diego shop, and we order series-matched doors from either CGI or a local cabinet shop depending on lead time. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll tell you what’s available for your specific kitchen.
