Tamko Driveway & Pavers: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
If your Tamko driveway or paver surface is cracking, sinking, or holding water where it shouldn’t, we can match the replacement material and have it installed before the next rain. In San Diego, driveway and paver replacement work typically runs $5,900 – $16,520 for a full driveway, while paver patio repairs fall between $4,130 and $12,980 depending on square footage, substrate condition, and the Tamko product line you’re matching. Most owners discover the problem the same way: a paver that’s shifted out of place, a low spot that collects water after a light drizzle, or a crack that wasn’t there last summer.
We’re an independent San Diego contractor, not a Tamko dealer, which means we match the material honestly and install it without pushing you toward a product you don’t need. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll tell you what it costs before any work starts.
Which Tamko Models This Applies To

Tamko’s driveway and paver products split into two main families: their concrete paver lines (including interlocking and permeable options) and their asphalt-based driveway surfacing products. The compatibility question comes down to what’s already on your property. If you have original Tamko pavers, look for a stamp or imprint on the underside of a loose paver. Most Tamko pavers run 60mm or 80mm thick for driveway applications; the 80mm units are rated for vehicle traffic and hold up better under San Diego’s clay-heavy soil shifts. The 60mm pavers are really meant for patios and walkways, and using them in a driveway is one of the most common failures we see.
For aftermarket matching, color and finish matter more than the brand name stamped on the mold. We’ve matched Tamko’s charcoal and terra cotta tones with Belgard and Unilock equivalents when the original line is discontinued or backordered. The key spec is dimension, not logo: a 4×8 paver needs a 4×8 replacement or your joint lines will wander. We measure before we order, every time.

Signs Your Tamko Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Water pooling in one spot after a light rain. This points to substrate settlement underneath the pavers, not the pavers themselves. San Diego’s clay soil expands and contracts with moisture, and without a proper compacted base, that movement telegraphs straight up through the surface.
- Pavers shifting or rocking underfoot. A loose paver usually means the edge restraint has failed or the sand jointing has washed out. Left alone, one rocking paver becomes three, then a wave pattern across the whole run.
- Hairline cracks spreading across multiple pavers in a line. That’s a load issue. If a heavy vehicle tracks the same path repeatedly and the base wasn’t compacted in lifts, the pavers crack along the stress line. Patching individual pavers won’t fix the base underneath.
- Asphalt edges crumbling or raveling. For Tamko asphalt driveway products, edge breakdown happens when water gets underneath the surface and weakens the bond. San Diego’s dry-then-downpour weather pattern accelerates this cycle.
- Weeds pushing up between joints. This means the joint sand has thinned or the underlying fabric barrier has torn. Weeds don’t grow through intact paver joints; their presence is a diagnostic clue, not just a cosmetic annoyance.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Diego, a full paver driveway installation runs $8,260 – $21,240, while a concrete driveway replacement lands between $5,310 and $14,160. If you’re sealing an existing driveway, that’s $295 – $825 depending on square footage and condition. The spread comes down to three things: how much base prep the existing surface needs, whether we’re matching existing Tamko pavers or doing a full new layout, and access to the site. A driveway with a 40-foot haul from the street costs more than one where the truck can back right up to the slab.
Every quote includes removal of the failed surface, base material and compaction, the pavers or surfacing material, edge restraints, joint sand, and cleanup. The written price you get before we start is the price on the invoice. No change orders because we didn’t mention the base would need work. Trevor Nash spells that out on the first walkthrough, and it’s the same standard we’ve held since 2004 under the Kingswell Way: say the price before the work, show up in the window we gave, leave the place cleaner than we found it.
DIY or Call Us?
You can check a few things safely. Pull up a corner paver and look at the base underneath. If you see more than an inch of sand without compacted aggregate below it, that’s your problem and it’s not a weekend fix. You can also run a hose over the surface and watch how the water moves. Those two checks tell you more than most paid inspections.
What you shouldn’t do is lift and reset a large paver section yourself. Pavers are heavier than they look, and without a plate compactor and proper edge restraint, the repair fails within months. That’s the repair that cracked again six weeks later, the one you don’t want. We do this work in San Diego full-time, with background-checked crews who arrive in uniform and a 365-day promise: if it fails inside the year, we’re back out and we fix it at no charge. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll walk the job with you, write the number down, and you decide from there.
FAQs

A properly installed Tamko paver driveway should last 25 to 30 years in San Diego’s climate, though the base underneath needs to be built right the first time. Sun exposure fades color gradually, but structural failure almost always traces back to base prep, not the paver itself. Call (619) 604-9624 if you want an honest assessment of what’s under your surface.
Yes, if the base is still sound and the damage is isolated to a few pavers or a small settled section. We can lift, re-level, and reset that area without tearing out the whole driveway. If the base has failed under a large area, spot repair just moves the problem six months down the road, and we’ll tell you that straight before recommending the cheaper fix.
Most San Diego driveway replacements take three to five working days from tear-out to final compaction, depending on access and weather. Paver patio work usually runs two to four days. We give a written arrival window before we start and the crew leaves the site clean at the end of each day.
We keep a range of 60mm and 80mm pavers in common colors on hand for repairs, and we source Tamko-compatible or equivalent Belgard and Unilock lines within a few days for full replacements. If you need a specific color matched, we’ll bring samples to your driveway before you commit to anything.
