Owens Corning Kitchen Remodeling: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
We match Owens Corning kitchen remodel components to your existing setup and install them for a typical San Diego price of $16,520 to $53,100, depending on kitchen size, cabinet line, countertop material, and whether we’re replacing a section or doing a full tear-out. Most failures show up as water-damaged drywall or substrate behind the sink, cracked countertop seams, or cabinet boxes pulling away from the wall after years of coastal humidity and shifting soil. You’ll know something’s wrong when the tile grout keeps cracking in the same spot, or when a cabinet door no longer lines up no matter how many times you adjust the hinge.
We’re an independent San Diego remodeler, not a corporate arm of Owens Corning. What that means for you: we stock and install the materials that work around your Owens Corning finishes, and we know which failures trace back to moisture and which trace back to framing.
Which Owens Corning Models This Applies To

Owens Corning doesn’t make kitchen cabinets or countertops. The company’s relevant kitchen products are insulation, air-sealing, and moisture-management materials: FOAMULAR rigid foam board, PINK Next Gen fiberglass, and ProPink blown-in insulation all sit inside or behind kitchen walls in San Diego homes. When you’re remodulating a kitchen that already has Owens Corning products installed, the compatibility question is about what’s behind the wall, not the cabinet door.
Here’s the gotcha most San Diego homeowners hit: FOAMULAR board installed in the 1990s or early 2000s is often 1/2-inch thick, while current code in coastal climate zones typically calls for 1-inch minimum when used as exterior continuous insulation. If you’re opening a kitchen wall and re-insulating, the gap matters because it changes the reveal depth at windows and the finished wall plane at the floor line. We measure the existing cavity before ordering, so the new drywall lands flush with the old.
For aftermarket equivalents, FOAMULAR has no direct competitor for compressive strength in a kitchen floor application: it carries a 25 psi rating across most thicknesses, and we’ve never had a floor install fail due to board compression in a San Diego kitchen. Owens Corning fiberglass batts are also dimensionally stable enough that we keep R-13 and R-15 rolls on the truck for both exterior wall and interior partition work around remodeled kitchens.

Signs Your Owens Corning Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Grout cracks keep reappearing at the countertop-to-backsplash line. This is almost always flex in the countertop deck below, not the grout itself. In San Diego, older Owens Corning-insulated kitchens often have 5/8-inch original subfloor that has worked loose over time. Re-caulking helps for a month; fixing the deck below is the only repair that holds.
- The kitchen wall feels cold against the back in January. R-11 batts laid into 2×4 walls are common in 1970s San Diego construction, and they underperform even without moisture issues. If the wall also feels damp at the base, the vapor transmission is coming from stucco outside, and the Owens Corning batt has lost its loft.
- Mold or mildew at the baseboard behind the sink even after repainting. This usually traces to a slow cabinet feed leak that soaked the drywall behind the toe kick, where Owens Corning insulation acts like a sponge. San Diego doesn’t get enough low-humidity days to self-correct wet insulation.
- Countertop seam is pulling apart in the middle of the run. Quartz and solid surface seams fail under lateral stress, which San Diego’s expansive clay soils deliver seasonally. The movement is rarely in the countertop itself; it’s in the cabinet boxes below shifting on the slab.
- A cabinet row sits 1/8 to 1/4 inch off level even after shimming. Shimming treats the symptom. The real cause is often floor joist deflection over a kitchen span of more than twelve feet, which frame inspections on older San Diego homes observe regularly.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

San Diego kitchen remodels that involve Owens Corning-compatible work run $16,520 to $53,100 installed. The range splits this way: a partial repair like re-insulating one exterior wall and re-drywalling behind the sink runs $4,000 to $8,000. A full kitchen remodel with new cabinets, countertops, backsplash, and insulation runs $28,000 to $53,100. The smaller kitchens in Mission Hills and North Park condos tend toward the bottom of the range; larger kitchens in La Jolla or Rancho Bernardo with island work and Cambria or Caesarstone tops push the top.
Everything is priced before we pull a single cabinet: written line-item pricing, a fixed start window, and a 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If something fails inside that year, we come back at no charge. No addendum, no change order, no “we only noticed once we opened the wall” surprise. Trevor Nash insists every Penhallow customer get the same thing he’d want if someone were cutting into his own kitchen: a number on paper and a warranty to boot.
Materials come from recognized trade brands like KraftMaid and Wellborn cabinetry, Cambria and Silestone countertops, and Owens Corning insulation products for the wall cavity work. The layers protect each other, and each carries its own warranty alongside ours.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re comfortable removing a baseboard and looking with a flashlight, you can check for moisture staining and missing insulation batts behind the toe kick. You can also remove an outlet cover (power off, please) and feel whether the gap around the box is sealed or leaking air. Those checks take ten minutes and tell you which direction the problem runs.
What you shouldn’t do is cut into a wall that might contain plumbing, electrical, or a moisture barrier you can’t see. San Diego building code requires permitted work for any remodel that alters a wall cavity, and drywall removal without a dust containment system will spread fiberglass insulation particles through your whole kitchen and dining area. If the failure is water-related, cutting the wall wrong can turn a $900 insulation job into a $9,000 mold remediation. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.
FAQs

Fiberglass batts and FOAMULAR board should last the life of the house if they stay dry, but San Diego’s coastal humidity combined with stucco wall systems means any water intrusion starts degrading the product’s R-value within about 12 months. Once wet, batt insulation never fully recovers its loft; board insulation can be air-dried if the moisture source is fixed quickly. Call (619) 604-9624 if you suspect water has reached the wall cavity.
Most insulation and drywall failures can be repaired without a full kitchen remodel, but the repair only lasts if the root cause is addressed first. We’ll tell you honestly whether the fix is a $900 opening-and-patching job or whether the underlying water source means the section needs full replacement. Estimates are free, and the written number is the number.
Most wall-cavity repairs in San Diego kitchens take one to two days, including drywall, mudding, and texture matching. A full kitchen remodel runs four to eight weeks depending on cabinet lead times, countertop templating, and whether you’re moving plumbing or electrical. We give you a start window in writing and we stick to it.
We keep R-13 and R-15 Owens Corning fiberglass batts and FOAMULAR board in common thicknesses on our San Diego trucks, along with the sealants and vapor barriers that go with them. For specific product specs, we can order and have them on site within a few days. We also regularly install KraftMaid and Wellborn cabinets, plus Cambria and Silestone countertops, so the whole job is coordinated under one written price.
