Wellborn Driveway & Pavers: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
If your Wellborn driveway or paver surface is cracking, sinking, or holding water, we can match the existing material and install a replacement that sits flush with the rest of your hardscape. A paver driveway replacement in San Diego typically runs $8,260 – $21,240, and a paver patio replacement runs $4,130 – $12,980, depending on square footage, base preparation, and paver style. Most owners discover the failure after a winter rain, when a low spot turns into a puddle that never drains, or when a paver edge starts shifting under a car tire.
Wellborn is a name you probably know from cabinetry, but if you have Wellborn-branded pavers or a driveway surface installed under that name, you’re dealing with the same concrete paver systems that dominate San Diego hardscapes. The failure is rarely the paver itself. It’s what sits underneath it. We’ll get into that below.
Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

Wellborn’s paver and driveway product lines fall into three general categories: standard concrete pavers (4″ x 8″, 6″ x 9″, and 8″ x 8″ formats), permeable pavers with wider joint gaps for drainage, and large-format driveway slabs (12″ x 12″ and larger) used on vehicle surfaces. The compatibility question that actually matters is not the brand stamp on the paver, it’s the thickness. Driveway pavers must be at least 60mm (about 2 3/8″) thick to handle vehicle weight. Patio and walkway pavers are thinner, usually 40mm to 50mm, and they will crack under a car. This is the number one compatibility gotcha we see in San Diego: someone replaces a driveway section with patio-grade pavers because they matched the color, and six months later the new section is cracked.
If you still have the original paperwork, the product number will tell us the exact series and color lot. If you don’t, we pull a paver from an inconspicuous edge, measure it, and match it against current Wellborn-compatible equivalents from Belgard and Unilock, which we source regularly. For older Wellborn installations, a perfect color match may require blending from two lots, and we’ll say that before we start, not after.

Signs Your Wellborn Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Standing water that lasts more than an hour after rain. The base material under the pavers has eroded or compacted unevenly, so the surface no longer drains. Left alone, the water works its way under more pavers and the problem widens.
- Pavers rocking when you step on them. The bedding sand layer has washed out or settled. A rocking paver will eventually crack at its edges, and adjacent pavers follow.
- A low spot or depression in the driveway. The sub-base wasn’t compacted adequately, or years of vehicle weight have compressed it. In San Diego’s clay-heavy soils, this is common after a few wet winters.
- Edge pavers spreading or shifting outward. The edge restraint has failed, which means the whole field loses lateral support. This is the first thing we check on any paver repair, because it’s the cheapest fix that prevents a much larger one.
- White, chalky residue or surface flaking. Efflorescence or spalling. The paver is absorbing water, and with San Diego’s wet-dry cycles, the surface starts to shed. It’s usually cosmetic at first, but it signals the sealer has failed.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we quote for San Diego paver and driveway work, using our written-price standard. The number you get is the number you pay.
- Paver driveway installation (new): $8,260 – $21,240
- Driveway replacement (tear out and reinstall): $5,900 – $16,520
- Concrete driveway installation: $5,310 – $14,160
- Asphalt driveway paving: $4,130 – $10,620
- Driveway sealing: $295 – $825
- Paver patio installation: $4,130 – $12,980
What moves the number: square footage, whether we’re replacing a section or the full field, base excavation depth, and whether the existing base can be salvaged. In older San Diego neighborhoods like Clairemont or Allied Gardens, we often find the original base was never built to modern spec, and that’s where cost goes up. Every quote includes the labor, materials, base work, edge restraint, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If something fails inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect a few things. Check the edge restraint: if you see plastic edging pulled away from the pavers, that’s the failure source. Check whether water pools in the same spot after rain. Check whether that one paver near the garage has dropped half an inch. What we’d caution against is lifting and resetting pavers yourself on a driveway. Vehicle-rated pavers are heavy, the base compaction has to be right or the new section settles within months, and a driveway repair half done is usually a driveway repair done twice. Same goes for sealing; the surface has to be clean and dry, and San Diego’s marine layer can turn a simple seal job into a cloudy mess if you catch the wrong week.

FAQs

A properly installed paver driveway in San Diego should last 25 to 40 years for the pavers themselves, with the base typically needing reset work around the 15 to 20 year mark. The pavers rarely fail first; the base does. If yours is failing before year 10, it’s almost always a base or drainage issue, not a paver defect. Call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll assess what you have.
Yes, if the failure is localized, we can cut out and reset a section, rebuild the base under it, and blend the color as closely as the existing lot allows. For larger or spreading failures, a full replacement is often cheaper per square foot than repeated section repairs. We’ll give you both numbers in writing before you commit.
A typical single-width San Diego driveway replacement takes 3 to 5 working days, including tear-out, base prep, paver installation, and compaction. A paver patio under 400 square feet is usually 2 to 3 days. Weather delays are rare here outside of a January storm, and we’ll tell you our arrival window before the crew shows up.
We keep common 60mm driveway pavers in standard colors on our trucks for section repairs, and we special-order Wellborn-compatible products from Belgard and Unilock for full replacements. We’re an independent contractor in San Diego, not affiliated with Wellborn, which means we’re free to recommend the best available match for your existing surface rather than whatever a single manufacturer happens to have in stock.
