Wellborn Windows & Doors: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

If you have a Wellborn window or door that’s sticking, leaking, or simply worn out, we can match the replacement part to your exact model and install it correctly the first time. In San Diego, we typically see Wellborn window and door component replacements run between $470 and $2,125 for repairs and hardware, while full window replacement runs $5,310 to $17,700 depending on size, glass package, and how many units you’re swapping. Most homeowners discover a failing part the hard way: a crank that suddenly spins free, a lock that won’t catch, or a sliding door that has gotten heavy and grinds against its track. That’s the moment you need a specific answer, not a showroom pitch.

Call (619) 604-9624

We’re an independent San Diego remodeling and repair company, not a Wellborn dealer or affiliate. What that means for you is simple: we choose the right part for your existing Wellborn product, or we tell you plainly if the smarter money is on replacing the whole unit. Trevor Nash and the Penhallow team have handled enough Wellborn windows and doors across San Diego to know the difference between a $40 roller assembly and a $1,400 full-sash replacement before we ever pick up a tool.

Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

New painted shaker cabinets with an organized deep drawer

Wellborn has produced windows and doors across several product generations, and not every part swaps between them. The quickest way to identify what you have is to look for the manufacturing sticker (usually on the inside edge of the sash or the top of the door panel) which gives the series code and sometimes the production date. If the sticker is gone, we measure the sash thickness, the roller wheel diameter, and the frame channel depth on-site to pinpoint what we’re working with.

Older Wellborn aluminum-frame windows from the 1990s and early 2000s use different balance springs and pivot bars than the later vinyl and composite lines. A homeowner with a 1998 Wellborn slider will not have the same roller hardware as someone with a 2015 model, and we’ve seen more than one person buy the wrong aftermarket roller kit online and wonder why the door still drags. For older lines, a quality aftermarket part can work well when the original is discontinued. For newer Wellborn products still under warranty, we recommend staying with OEM components so you don’t void what protection you have left. We carry common Wellborn-compatible roller assemblies, crank mechanisms, sash locks, and weatherstripping profiles on our trucks for the San Diego market, and we can order less common parts directly when needed.

Signs Your Wellborn Windows & Doors Is Failing

  • Sliding door requires two hands and a hip check to open. The roller wheels underneath have worn flat or the bearings have seized. California’s dry, dusty conditions grind fine grit into the track, and once a roller starts dragging, the track grooves get worse fast.
  • Crank window turns but the sash barely moves. The operator gear teeth have stripped or the arm linkage has bent. This is extremely common on San Diego casements that face afternoon sun; the heat cycles fatigue the metal over five to ten years.
  • Lock or latch won’t catch anymore. The strike plate has shifted or the lock body has worn internally. Sometimes the fix is a simple adjustment; other times the lock assembly itself is replaced.
  • Drafts or visible daylight at the frame edge. The weatherstripping has compressed and lost its memory, or the sash has settled out of square. Coastal homes in Point Loma and Ocean Beach see salt air accelerate weatherstripping breakdown noticeably, while inland homes in La Mesa and El Cajon deal with dry heat cracking the material instead.
  • Water stains on the interior frame or sill after rain. The exterior weep system or the glazing seal has failed. San Diego’s winter rains may be light by most standards, but they’re enough to find every weak seal in your window wall.

Any one of these is fixable. Ignored, they compound: a dragging roller carves the track, a failed seal rots the sill, and a bad lock becomes a security issue. Call us at (619) 604-9624 when you first notice the symptom.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A stone counter, tile backsplash and open shelf after a kitchen remodel

For Wellborn window and door hardware and component repair in San Diego, you’re generally looking at $470 to $2,125 depending on the part and the access. A single roller assembly swap might land at the low end of that range. A full window replacement runs $5,310 to $17,700, with the wider range reflecting the number of windows, glass package, and whether the frames themselves need rework.

What drives the number: the specific Wellborn series you own, whether the part is still produced or has to be sourced as a discontinued item, and whether the frame or track has damage beyond the part itself. We write the price down before any work starts, and that number is the number. The written quote includes the part, the labor, the cleanup, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the part or the install fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. Full window installations carry that same written guarantee, and we’ll give you the warranty terms in plain language before you sign anything.

DIY or Call Us?

Some Wellborn maintenance is safe to handle yourself: cleaning the track with a dry brush, wiping the weatherstripping with a silicone lubricant, and tightening visible screws on a loose lock. If your problem is fixed by cleaning and tightening, we’ll be the first to say so.

Beyond that, call us. Window balance springs and door roller assemblies live under tension, and a slipped spring or a heavy glass panel coming off its track can do real damage to fingers and walls. We also see plenty of San Diego homeowners who replaced a roller themselves, only to discover the track was so worn that the new roller died within three months. The repair is usually faster and cheaper when the track and the part get addressed together. For a free estimate on your Wellborn window or door repair, call (619) 604-9624 and we’ll put the number in writing.
