KraftMaid Home Additions & ADU: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

KraftMaid home additions and ADU construction in San Diego typically run $53,100 to $153,400, and yes, we handle the cabinetry integration from rough framing to final hardware. Most homeowners reach out when a builder-grade add-on has settled, the drywall seams have cracked at the ceiling line, or the existing KraftMaid cabinets no longer align after the foundation shifted. We’ll walk you through what’s actually failing, what it costs to correct, and how to decide whether to repair or rebuild the addition entirely.

Penhallow Remodeling San Diego is an independent general contractor. We’re not affiliated with KraftMaid, but we install and work around their cabinetry on additions and ADUs throughout San Diego County every month.

Which KraftMaid Models This Applies To

If your addition or ADU has KraftMaid cabinetry in the kitchen, bath, laundry, or built-in storage, you need to know a few things before anyone pulls a permit. KraftMaid runs several cabinet lines, including the stock Vantage line, the semi-custom Venicia line, and the full-custom KraftMaid Custom line. The older models from the 1990s and early 2000s used a different hinge bore pattern and face-frame dimensions than what KraftMaid ships today, so matching a single cabinet box or door to an existing run means measuring the stile width and hinge cup diameter before ordering anything.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see in San Diego all the time: a home addition built in 2005 with KraftMaid’s square raised-panel doors will not accept a 2024 door replacement without resizing the opening or replacing the entire front frame. The rail and stile proportions changed, and the new doors run about 3/16 inch narrower. If you’re pricing a repair that involves cabinet work, know that older KraftMaid runs often need a full front replacement rather than a door swap.

We also work around Cambria, Silestone, and Kohler products on these projects. KraftMaid doesn’t make countertops or fixtures, so if your addition has a Silestone counter that’s delaminated from the cabinet base, the counter is repairable while the cabinet below may or may not be salvageable. We’ll tell you which is which before we open a wall.

Signs Your KraftMaid Home Addition or ADU Is Failing

  • Doors that stick or swing shut on their own. This almost always means the floor or wall framing has settled and the cabinet boxes are now out of square. In San Diego, clay soil expansion during winter rains is the most common cause of slab movement under additions.
  • Drywall cracks at the seam where the addition meets the original house. That junction is called the transition seam, and it’s the first place differential settling shows. A hairline crack is normal after year one; a gap wider than 1/8 inch means the addition’s foundation is moving independently.
  • Gaps above cabinet crown molding or below toe kicks. When the ceiling joists sag or the floor dips, the cabinets stay rigid and the gap opens up. This is a structural problem, not a cabinet problem.
  • Baseboards pulling away from the wall at the outside corners of the addition. Thermal expansion and contraction of the framing is normal here, but persistent separation signals that the wall plate isn’t anchored properly.
  • Floor tile cracking in a stair-step pattern near the addition’s entryway. That pattern follows the mortar bed’s bond lines and usually means the subfloor is deflecting more than the tile assembly can handle.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A walk-in pantry with wood shelving

In San Diego, a full home addition with KraftMaid cabinetry typically runs $53,100 to $153,400. That range covers everything from a 200-square-foot bump-out with a small kitchenette to a 600-square-foot primary suite addition with a full bath. An ADU with KraftMaid cabinets, a Kohler bath, and Silestone counters runs $106,200 to $259,600 depending on whether it’s attached, detached, or a garage conversion.

What drives the number up or down: site access for excavation equipment, soil condition at the foundation (San Diego’s clay zones in Clairemont and La Mesa add pier depth), whether the existing electrical panel has spare capacity, and the cabinet line you choose. KraftMaid Vantage runs about 30% less than the custom line, but you give up modification options on box depth and door style.

Every quote we write is a written price before any work starts. That price includes the framing, the cabinetry, the finish work, the permit fees we can predict, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If something fails inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge. The number on day one is the number on the invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

Some things on a failing addition you can check yourself: pull a level across the cabinet tops and note where the bubble drifts, feel for moisture under the sink base, look for visible separation at the transition seam. These are diagnostics, not fixes. What you should not do is attempt to jack a settled floor, cut into a load-bearing wall, or shim cabinets to hide a structural problem. That last one just transfers the movement elsewhere and makes the eventual repair cost more.

If the addition’s framing is moving, you need to know whether it’s dead load deflection, live load bounce, or foundation settlement. That requires a licensed contractor with a level, a crawlspace, and the patience to explain what’s actually happening. Call us at (619) 604-9624 for a straight answer and a free estimate. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll go from there.
